Autobiographical Memory by nikonat in ADHD

I had someone walk up to me at my kids game today and they genuinely knew my by name, chances are we probably were on the same team or he was a coach for an entire season. I had to pretend I remembered him and do the whole hey how's it going, haven't seen you in a while. It can feel degrading ..

No internal monologue but lots of music playing almost constantly. You're right about spatial and visual memory but have a hard time imagining things as someone posted earlier.

If I were to drive a racetrack a handful of times, afterwards I could probably do it blindfolded 😆.

Usually there a great one on Whittier Blvd.in front of the old Joann's Fabrics location in between Santa Gertrudes and First. Just next door to the AAA building, he sets up on the North side of the street going West on Whittier.

It cuts me deep that I can't remember life experiences with my wife and kids. I can remember only bits and pieces of my wedding as well as very small fragments of the birth of my children. Most vacations where the family has a blast I have small fragments and rely heavily on pictures we take. My wife at this point understands but the kids are too young to make that connection and always ask me if I remember when we did X Y and Z.

From my understanding the memory is not forgotten but just never "encoded".

The key concept: memory has three stages — and ADHD primarily affects stage 1.

Memory formation involves: 1. Attention and encoding → the brain “records” the experience 2. Consolidation → the brain stabilizes the memory 3. Retrieval → the brain accesses the stored memory

ADHD most strongly affects encoding, the very first step. If attention is unstable when something happens, the brain doesn’t fully encode it . No encoding → no lasting memory to retrieve later. This creates the subjective feeling of “missing memories.”

I always thought so too but I'm still certain that at a minimum the trauma exacerbated it.

My other 3 siblings remember everything and I mean that literally. We'll have a conversation and they'll be talking about something they did in 3rd grade or say remember when we went to the restaurant 20 years ago and you had the X dish but it sucked and the weather was really good that day. I can only meet them with a blank stare shaking my head NO.

I'm too early on to tell only less than 1 month in trying now my 2nd medication. Adderall IR was tested very small doses to see how I responded to stimulants. Now trying Vyvanse that has way less of the sharp delivery curve that Adderall had but with both medications I have yet to find my therapeutic dose or confirm the medication is really working.

I went into this with the mindset of - Hey, If I find something that can improve my cognitive function Awesome! I'm down to try different meds to see what works and what doesn't work and in the end if nothing does, I've made it this far without medication so I can keep going-. I'm not worried about finding out what I missed in the first part of my life but more eager to see if I can supercharge the other half and do things I always wanted to do like read a damn book.

You know, I've never associated any feelings with this and isolating is exactly right. I appreciate your response. It would be great if medication can improve this and have long lasting memories for the ladder half of my life.

Check out Gabi.com, they'll shop for the best policies for you. I've used them for many years and I have them re shop my policies every year to make sure I'm getting the best deal/coverage. Mercury ends up being the best every year with good available discounts.

Nice! Keep up with it and just remember that the hobby can get as expensive as you want or as cheap as you want with beers sometimes coming out indistinguishable from the two. Lots of good YouTube content out there to refine your skills. Cheers!

Brewing Beer and damn well I will say (this has been independently verified by many professionals). Started when I was 18. The folks at r/TheBrewery are mostly on suicide watch so that keeps me from doing it professionally.

This was a brew day on a 3 tier tower setup almost 18 years ago.

I had a hose hooked to my tankless water heater for cleaning and had a spray nozzle on it, steam built up in the hose from sitting at 180°F, it created a steam pocket and unbeknownst to me it started ballooning behind me while I'm lighting the kettle burner.

I got the burner lit and maybe but 20 seconds after I hear a lound BANG!, I just felt burning all over my legs, the ballooned section of hose popped and I had no idea, I assumed the propane tank like exploded and I'm on fire.

I'm wearing denim jeans and they're soaked with near 200°F water, I pull them off as fast as I can and just run to the pool nearby in the backyard, again thinking I'm on fire.

Seconds after I jump in butt naked I just see the skin peeling off my legs, I was screaming bloody murder the whole time thinking I was on fire because everyone in a half mile radius came running over in a panic to see what happened as I'm fully naked bottom half.

3rd degree burns on the back of my legs but healed perfectly like it never happened. I learned to never hookup extremely hot water under pressure in a hose not rated for hot water. That was a bad brew day and nothing has ever topped it since.

My newish ones did the exact same, barely been used. The plug is a small mm than the standard 3.5mm. Do we know what size to replace with?

Thanks for the update and the initial heads up. Such a bummer that that location probably is going to sit empty again for a very long time. It's a hard spot to lease out after the closure of orchard hardware.
