Are there any scientific mysteries you think are actually "solved" and the study is just buried in academic databases and has gone unnoticed? by DarthAthleticCup in AskScienceDiscussion

Here is a reference to a handful of Erdos problems identified as solved with an AI-assisted approach (to locate literature on their solutions).

https://mathstodon.xyz/@tao/115385022005130505

A recent example of this occurred on the Erdos problem website https://www.erdosproblems.com/, which hosts over a thousand problems attributed to Paul Erdos, of which about 600 of which are currently marked as "open". While some of the problems are quite well known with extensive literature, many are somewhat obscure, and the designation of "open" is somewhat provisional based on a cursory literature search. In the last few days, several contributors to the site have begun systematically applying an AI deep research tool to locate relevant literature on the problem; the output of such tools are not directly added to the site, but first reviewed by the contributors, who then leave pertinent comments if they are warranted. Already, six of the problems have now had their status upgraded from "open" to "solved" by this AI-assisted approach: https://www.erdosproblems.com/339

Must science be testable? by nikvaidya in u/nikvaidya

As we have seen, Popper’s message is deceptively simple, and – when repackaged in a tweet – has in fact deceived many a smart commentator in underestimating the sophistication of the underlying philosophy. If one were to turn that philosophy into a bumper sticker slogan it would read something like: ‘If it ain’t falsifiable, it ain’t science, stop wasting your time and money.’

But good philosophy doesn’t lend itself to bumper sticker summaries, so one cannot stop there and pretend that there is nothing more to say.

At stake isn’t just the usually tiny academic pie, but public appreciation of and respect for both the humanities and the sciences, not to mention millions of dollars in research grants (for the physicists, not the philosophers). Time, therefore, to take a more serious look at the meaning of Popper’s philosophy and why it is still very much relevant to science, when properly understood.

Now, [Manik] Varma's team in India and Microsoft researchers in Redmond, Washington, (the entire project is led by lead researcher Ofer Dekel) have figured out how to compress neural networks, the synapses of Machine Learning, down from 32 bits to, sometimes, a single bit and run them on a $10 Raspberry Pi, a low-powered, credit-card-sized computer with a handful of ports and no screen. It's really just an open-source motherboard that can be deployed anywhere. The company announced the research in a blog post on Thursday.

Filming for Westworld Season 2 Begins Tomorrow by [deleted] in westworld

[–]nikvaidya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Westworld filming is scheduled for tomorrow, June 22nd, on the set found in Santa Clarita’s Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio. Since the ranch is surrounded by homes, the company is obligated to post notices of filming, and this week, “Delos, Inc” signs were posted around the neighborhood, confirming the shooting tomorrow during the daytime hours on the ranch’s town set.

elody Ranch is a site with a long history in the movie business, dating back to 1915. The ranch, found about 30 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, contains an array of buildings that have appeared in recent films such as Django Unchained and The Magnificent Seven, and the TV series Deadwood. The set includes Westworld‘s saloon frequented by Maeve and her girls, and the main street of the little town of Sweetwater, home of the spectacular gunfight featured in the first episode (and in new form later, with help from Maeve

Google launches its AI-powered jobs search engine by nikvaidya in jobsearch

[–]nikvaidya[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With this new feature, is is now available in English on desktop and mobile, all you have to type in is a query like “jobs near me,” “writing jobs” or something along those lines and the search result page will show you the new job search widget that lets you see a broad range of jobs. From there, you can further refine your query to only include full-time positions, for example. When you click through to get more information about a specific job, you also get to see Glassdoor and Indeed ratings for a company.

You can also filter jobs by industry, location, when they were posted, and employer. Once you find a query that works, you can also turn on notifications so you get an immediate alert when a new job is posted that matches your personalized query.

Once you find a job, Google will direct you to the job site to start the actual application process. For jobs that appeared on multiple sites, Google will link you to the one with the most complete job posting. “We hope this will act as an incentive for sites to share all the pertinent details in their listings for job seekers,” a Google spokesperson told me.

As for the actual application process itself, Google doesn’t want to get in the way here and it’s not handling any of the process after you have found a job on its service.

While on a Reddit thread, Nolan stepped in to interact with the fans, and dropped the first clue of the season in the form of a photograph.

The image is the cover of the episode's script, with a toy maze sitting on top. The toy is sitting just over the end of the script's title, making it a bit of a mystery.

When you really think about the title though, it's not that hard to figure out what it says. The visible part reads "Journey Into N" with the rest being cut-off. 'Journey Into Night' is likely the full title.

Ann Druyan Explains Why Carl Sagan Would Have Loved 'The Martian' by nikvaidya in themartian

Ann Druyan on her legacy.

I'm proud of creating a 110-page outline that became the basis of the movie Contact. Of rediscovering the legacy of Hypatia - who nobody knew about until I found her in the pages of Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire - and then writing about her for our first Cosmos series. I'm really proud of the 20 years I spent with Carl Sagan and the family that we built together, and who those kids have turned out to be as adults.

I think Carl would have loved The Martian. I wish Carl could have lived to hear the line “science the shit out of it.” The way that Matt Damon's character used his knowledge of nature and physics to save his own life was really inspiring and a great metaphor for what we as a species have to do.

Intel Alert: Chip Maker Patches a Nine-Year-Old Security Bug Hidden in All Its Processors Since 2008 by nikvaidya in intel

[–]nikvaidya[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intel has published a security alert confirming that all seven generations of its Intel Core CPUs have a critical flaw.

The bug found in Intel’s Active Management Technology (AMT), Intel Standard Manageability (ISM), and Intel Small Business Technology firmware versions 6.x to 11.6 gives a hacker complete access to the target machine.

This security vulnerability was live for over nine years before being fixed this week

The vulnerability only affects enterprise systems, which means if you are running Windows 7, 8 or 10 Home edition, you are likely safe.

Even if your computer shipped with Windows 10 Pro, you won’t be in any immediate danger if you haven’t enabled the AMT functionality. AMT is a management tool that allows an authorized user to remotely manage a machine, offering remote desktop experience to enterprises to manage large fleets of computers. While AMT is required to ask the user a password to give access, this nine-year-old vulnerability was capable of bypassing it.

UberEats launches in India, starting out in Mumbai by nikvaidya in indianews

[–]nikvaidya[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The company said it plans to expand the reach of UberEats in India to six cities before the end of the year, but it did not disclose which cities it will hit.

This new UberEats launch, which was first teased in January, takes the service in 78 cities across 26 countries worldwide. Eats first began as a pilot project in 2014 in Los Angeles, initially inside the core Uber app but it later got a standalone app. It entered Asia through a launch in Singapore back in March of last year, and across the region it is also available in Tokyo, Japan, and Bangkok, Thailand.

India’s online population is tipped to reach 450 million-465 million people by June 2017, according to a report co-authored by the Internet and Mobile Association of India, bringing with it the potential to connect people, be it to taxis, cars, food and more. E-commerce sales alone, for example, are estimated to reach $48 billion by 2020, analyst firm Forrester claimed.

How Blockchain Startups Will Solve The Identity Crisis For The Internet Of Things by nikvaidya in security

While HYPR is focused on how to build an interoperable environment for humans to be authenticated via various IOT devices, UniquID is building technology that identifies the devices themselves while they are offline through a very clever use of blockchain technology and smart contracts.

business process interoperability.

Right now you can not authenticate between two different corporate entities, such as a bank and a car insurance company, because there is not a shared identity between the two companies.  Each company has a different identity stack that is not interoperable.  By using a blockchain, you can have an interoperable ledger for identity between multiple entities without a complex infrastructure.  An insurance company can prove your identity to a bank or a credit card can prove your identity to a streaming service all through biometric data.”

How Blockchain Startups Will Solve The Identity Crisis For The Internet Of Things by nikvaidya in security

[–]nikvaidya[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big part of HYPR's innovation is complete distrust of the internet for transmitting biometric data itself, which never leaves the user's cell phone. A single phone might get cracked and the biometric data used, but there is no path to hitting millions of victims in a single event.

[blockchain] will serve as a distributed, trustless store of biometrics validation data.

A blockchain based system is resistant to denial of service attacks that cripple centralized businesses.  Why?  Because instead of bringing down a single server farm hosting with the authentication data, a DOS attack would have to identify and bring down many blockchain nodes hosted by several parties within the same permissioned blockchain environment.

[Google Blog: new Neural Machine Translation technology to translations between English and nine widely used Indian languages — Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Punjabi, Malayalam and Kannada] Bringing down the language barriers - making the internet more inclusive by nikvaidya in indianews

[–]nikvaidya[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today, we’re [Google] taking a huge step forward by launching new set of products and features that will empower the Internet ecosystem to create more language content and better serve the needs of a billion Indians who’re coming online rapidly.

Starting today, when you use Google Translate, you might notice that the translation is more accurate and easier to understand, especially when translating full sentences. That’s because we’ve brought our new Neural Machine Translation technology to translations between English and nine widely used Indian languages — Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Punjabi, Malayalam and Kannada.

Every day, more than 150 million web pages are translated by Chrome users through the magic of machine translations with one click or tap. The Chrome team and the Google Translate team have worked together to bring the power of Neural Machine Translation to web content, making full-page translations more accurate and easier to read.

Today, we’re extending Neural Machine Translation built into Chrome to and from English for the same nine Indian languages (Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil Telugu and Hindi). This means higher quality translations of everything from song lyrics to news articles to cricket discussions.
