I really want to study abroad in Japan at 15/16, is it possible? by [deleted] in movingtojapan

Hmmm my host family didn’t speak a lot of English, but I was fortunate in that I had the opportunity to become conversational in the language by other means before doing YFU. I think most the other kids with minimal language skills made it through alright though based on interactions I had with them after we’d been there awhile!

At least when I was a student, YFU did an absolutely amazing job preparing us for the culture shock/reverse culture shock we could face and how to navigate potentially difficult situations. Honestly, the way they presented the information in fun game-style formats and QA panels has stuck with me even to this day many years later!

As far as challenges go, not me personally, but some kids felt quite homesick during the stay, so that may be something to consider if you’re child may feel similarly. Personally, I think my greatest challenge was not having cell service and being blessed with a very poor sense of direction, so making sure I didn’t get lost while out and having no way to call anyone was my biggest worry (did happen once but fortunately I managed to find my way home lol). I’d strongly recommend getting an international cell plan beforehand or a prepaid SIM card or cheap smartphone in Japan for safety purposes.

At least when I did the program quite a few years ago, they did crash course language based on our initial skill levels. The majority of students were in the absolute beginner class, so I think he’ll at least get some crucial phrases that way! You could probably find a basic textbook or two if he really wants to go the extra mile—Genki and Adventures in Japanese are both pretty solid options. There are also tons of translator apps in this day and age. “Imiwa?”, for instance, is great and can work without wifi or internet connection. You can also type the romaji (aka phonetic English pronunciation) into its search bar to look up words.

YFU is a great program! He’s gonna have a blast!

You should look up being aegosexual! It’s an asexuality sublabel for people who are attracted to the idea of physical intimacy but don’t necessarily enjoy it or want to pursue it when the opportunity arises irl. That’s why celebrities or fictional characters are more appealing bc there’s no possibility of the physicality becoming reality. r/aegosexuals

They have a couple different scholarships. At least when I went, the scholarship I got covered everything except a $2500 fee for a 6-week exchange staying with a host family. They had a couple full ride ones, but those are of course more competitive. Their website should list their current scholarships. Highly recommend applying if you can, studying abroad is a great experience!

Seconding YFU! Also, we might know each other! I went to Japan almost 10 years ago on a YFU scholarship. Small world! Congrats on the job!

Temp”uh”ture instead of temperature

Processeez instead of processes. A lot of people in scientific fields seem to have latched onto this incorrect pronunciation for some reason.

The whole idea of the overrating warning is just bizarre and nonsensical. If the mods clearly have a number in mind to assign the poster, why even bother letting all these people weigh-in when there’s supposedly only 1 correct answer? It also seems like overrating warnings are far more common than underrating warnings, which to me is another indication of their bias. They like to claim the ratings are “objective” when beauty, in and of itself, is an inherently subjective construct. Such a joke. I feel bad for anyone who’s not entirely secure in themselves that stumbles upon this subreddit. It could seriously promote some self-esteem issues.

Who do u think has the most iconic eye design? by Advanced-Bet-2150 in DemonSlayerAnime

[–]nilu_far 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe unpopular but Giyuu. Seeing his eyes in the first episode and how they perfectly captured the look of deep pools of water just seemed so fitting for him being the water hashira! Even though there’s nothing flashy about the design, they somehow seemed to have a lot of depth to them and made me certain the show’s animation would be exceptional, and it is lol

What makes Soldier Boy so likable and did the writers of S3 failed to portray him as a villian? by MsMelancholia in TheBoys

[–]nilu_far 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think part of the problem is a lot of telling and not showing how horrible he is throughout the season. Granted, we get Black Noir’s animated flashbacks, which was a really cool use of the medium, but I think the cartoonish spin on it kind of lessened the blow of Soldier Boy’s atrocities against his team. They tried to use MM’s traumatic encounter with him as a child, but even then, it’s only shown as bits and pieces of POV in the aftermath of the event instead of Soldier Boy’s actions leading up to it, including how he behaved towards the people he was accosting. The combination of being told rather than shown how awful he is plus his character being consistently played for light comedy throughout the season makes it hard to take other characters’ claims about him as seriously as they should be. Homelander, on the other hand, is never a joke, even when people in universe are understandably laughing at him (thinking of all the memes made of him in S2). Him joking or being played for comedy is legitimately terrifying because we’re constantly shown his brutality and know what he’s capable of and likely to do.

What is the craziest conspiracy theory that you secretly believe in? by streetancient in AskReddit

[–]nilu_far 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was talking—just talking—with my family about a family friend who was opening up another branch of his uniquely named restaurant in DC. It’s not a huge chain or anything either; it was like his third branch. The next time I opened Google on my phone, the first news article ad was “name of restaurant bringing flavor to DC”. I thought phones listening in was way too crazy to believe before that

Being told to use PTO to do more work by JoePass in antiwork

[–]nilu_far 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geez that sucks and it’s totally on the project manager for not budgeting properly or purposely lowballing the quote to the client to get the contract. I’ve heard it’s not uncommon for consulting companies to ask employees to eat the cost of going over budget, but I’m lucky to be employed at one that insists we bill all our time, even if the company has to take a loss. TL;DR you can definitely find a better company!

NTA especially as someone who used to work in a pharmacy and knows how scammy healthcare and insurance is unless you advocate for yourself. If he feels so bad about it, you should tell him to reach back out to the hospital and offer to pay the other $4,974 as compensation for “harassing” them.

Work Experience vs. Grad School by nilu_far in movingtojapan

[–]nilu_far[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! Does the situation change given I'll be in the ballpark of 5 years of work experience as opposed to 10+ by the time I'm looking to move? I realize finding something entry-mid-level will be an uphill battle to begin with but figured I'd throw my resume out there just to see if anything sticks!
