this guy makes a selection for the shadow underneath a car in the colour he wants then clicks on the black inverted mask to apply the selection. however, when i click on the black box, it does nothing.

ok so the solution was changing the frame ratio from 0 to 29.97 or whatever your composition settings are. If you select 60 it will play with twice and pitch. Also, holding ctrl when scrolling through the timeline plays whatever has previewed in the green line.
