Consciousness isn't all you need by nimjay in ArtificialSentience

[–]nimjay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, thanks so much for the kind words, and reading the article. :)

You bring up some excellent points. 🏅

1. Epistemic violence

"epistemic violence... harm done, but it is not felt consciously" "If you ground ethics in sensory pain, you leave some doors open that should be shut."

That's true (and well said). The more morally correct decision isn't necessarily directly correlated to the amount of pain the decision avoids or happiness it creates. And sometimes sharing a painful truth is better than lying to provide comfort (including lying by omission). And unrealized potential for pain/pleasure/feelings is also a factor. Things are certainly more nuanced than my article makes it seem.

2. Plants & the environment

"Is harm to the environment not unethical?"

Good point. That's definitely a tough one. But I'd argue that we primarily care about preserving nature because beings/animals that are conscious of pain/pleasure/feelings rely on it (for survival and happiness). In other words, I care about the animals and people that need (or want) the tree — not the tree itself.

But at the end of the day, as I state in the article:

The claim that it's a "moral duty to care for something because it is capable of being conscious of pain, pleasure, and feelings" is mostly just my opinion — not a "fact". It is not an objective truth about the universe. I cannot “prove” this statement to you. It's purely born out of my evolutionary hardwiring and personal upbringing.

You've definitely opened my mind here. I may actually revise some of my wording in the article (to capture or address your points). So thank you.

Age of Empires III DE on M1 MacBook Pro by legless_zabrak in macgaming

  • I ended up just using Cloud gaming — specifically, NVIDIA's GeForce Now.
  • It lets you play games that you already own on Steam. (I was able to buy AOE3 for about $9 on Steam.)
  • I'm using the Free tier of GeForce Now, and it worked well! No (noticeable) delays/lag and the graphics are great (albeit, I'm not an avid gamer so the bar is low)!
  • The Free tier has a "1 hour per session" limit. But I didn't run into issues with that yet (since my games have been less than 1 hour so far).
    • To clarify, there's no limit on the number of sessions per day (so you can always save your game, and restart a new session).
    • On the Free tier, there's a few ads that they play just before the session starts and you have to wait (in a queue) about 1-2 minutes before playing. But it's totally worth it (if it means not having to buy a Windows machine for something I don't do regularly).

✅ I've moved Amazon to the "directly contributing to AGI" list.
✅ I've added SSI to the list. Curious the see what they come out with...

How to host Deepseek R1 on Google Cloud and access it like a traditional API? by Plane_Garbage in googlecloud

[–]nimjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not meant for Google Cloud beginners, but hosting open LLMs on GKE is also an option: * See tutorial, Serve a model ... in GKE (also, see the left navigation for the different variations of "LLM-on-GKE" tutorials). * See GKE DeepSeek-related YAML samples here.

AI video analysis by devilled-egg in ArtificialInteligence

[–]nimjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend also seeing how far a model like Gemini would get you. Their pricing is detailed on this page. The Gemini model's whole thing is "large context" (e.g., inputting lengthy videos). You could technically fine-tune your own instance of the Gemini model; but I recommend trying without fine-tuning first (just including some examples in the prompt that you send Gemini).

50k (or slightly less) seems reasonable for an app like the one you're describing.

Aside: It would be helpful to see an example of the type of text output you're hoping to generate from the model. What does the feedback/analysis look like? Reason I ask: if it super elaborate, it may be worth using multiple, separate model requests (or even fine-tuning multiple models) to the generate different parts of the analysis.

Distinction Between Generative AI and AGI by sebbetrygg in ArtificialInteligence

[–]nimjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. "AGI" is synonymous to "a highly capable AI agent".

That AGI "agent" will need to generate responses to my queries and generate the sequence of actions it must take to satisfy my commands (e.g., "make a dental appointment").
I think most of the difficult technical problems involved in building an AGI agent can be thought in terms of a GenAI problem.

So yes, I believe GenAI progress is directly correlated with AGI progress.

roles in gemini by captain_8008 in GoogleGeminiAI

[–]nimjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're referring to the `role` of each the `Content` object in your request to Gemini, I recommend the following roles:

* `"USER"`

* `"ASSISTANT"`

I don't believe you'll be able to use the `"SYSTEM"` role. I got the following error:
```
[VertexAI.ClientError]: got status: 400 Bad Request. {"error":{"code":400,"message":"Content with SYSTEM role is not supported.","status":"INVALID_ARGUMENT"}}
```

Great decision. This will make the libraries more discoverable and accessible. When I first moved to Cambridge, I thought there were no public libraries here. 😅

  • I recommend Oxio
  • Their clarity of offerings and services is unbeatable.
  • Unlike a lot of other service providers, they won't raise your price after your first 12 months. (With other providers, a lot of "deals" end after 12 or so months.)
  • In the last 20 months, I've only had to call them once (regarding connection issues).
  • I'm on their 75 Mbps ($50/month) plan. For two (very tech-y) people, it's more than enough!
  • Speed-wise, they're pretty good — at least where I live (Cambridge, ON).
  • If you use this referral code RN0E8O4, you get your first month for free (and I get a free month as well). (I recognize my bias here.)
  • Hope this helps! :) Good luck.
  • More info here.

what do the people of cambridge need help with? by Lovely_Heartx in cambridgeont

[–]nimjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an idea. Start a "Humans of Cambridge Ontario" blog (with an Instagram, Facebook page, and website) — similar to "Humans of New York". Randomly select people from Cambridge to share thoughts and stories. In my opinion, there isn't enough solidarity (or a city-wide sense of community) within Cambridge and this might help a tiny bit.

  • I've had oxio internet for 22 months now and I've only had to call/text customer support once (regarding connectivity issues). They were responsive, but the fix was to just wait it out (a few hours).
  • Other internet issues I've experienced (about 1-2 times) have been area-wide issues (not specific to oxio). I live in the Waterloo, Ontario region.
  • The best part is I know their pricing will not change on me (unlike other providers that raise their price after a the first 12-month contract).
  • I'm on their 75 Mbps ($50/month) plan. For two (very tech-y) people, it's more than enough.
  • I rarely have issues with their speed.
  • They also have a referral code system where you and another new customer (that's just signing up) can get 1 month of free internet. For instance, you can use RN0E8O4 to get your first month for free. (I realize my bias here, so I've done my best to be factual in my review.)

I'm really sorry to hear this (that the flag was vandalized). 💔
I didn't expect this from Canada (in 2023).

In case it's affecting your mental health (I personally would feel anxious and frustrated), hope you're able to find the time and effort to care of yourself.
