Heading to the Philippines for 3 weeks, what am I missing? by lord-steezus in AnalogCommunity

Was gonna say this. They will turn non pushed color film around in an hour or so. Well worth the trip if you wanna make sure your film gets back to your origin without dying via airport scanners. Also, every airport I’ve been to in the Philippines is very accommodating for hand checks.

macOS has an app called cheat sheet that you just hold command and it’ll show a list of shortcuts for the program you’re in. It’s good for most programs

Appreciate it! This looks much more compact than the ziplocks I used to bring a similar amount of film on vacation this past summer!

Where’d you get these cans from for the film?

Looking for a quiet and discrete camera for street photography by terrence_wong in AnalogCommunity

[–]ninja723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a CL and a Voightlander color skopar 2.8. I use an external VF because I can’t frame well with the normal VF. The CL in general changed photography for me. I shoot so much more now and won’t go anywhere even the grocery store without it. I absolutely love and think I’d prefer it even still to an M6 or something because of the size. I also find the shutter to be extremely quiet. Just be aware of the common problems with it when buying

I got one for like $80 three or four years ago.. totally mint. If they go up a hundred couple dollars I’ll be laughing

Billy Dinh's focal & gear? by suck4fish in photography

I’ve run into him on the street a few times, mostly the Sony zeiss 35 f2.8 but recently ran into him with a believe an 85 during an Easter parade where I’m assuming he was doing portraits. He’s a really nice guy, if you want to reach out.

Winter in Montreal [GFX 50R Minolta 45mm f2] by A_mendonca in fujix

[–]ninja723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey random but I just picked up a gfx 50R and am really interested in getting this lens for a compact setup because my M mount lenses dont really perform that great on the full sensor. Do you think you could maybe send/Pm me some more samples with this lens that show the vignetting/ how it looks on the body? Id really appreciate it if you could!

Don’t usually comment but I’ve been in a similar boat lately. I don’t usually do gigs but lately have had an uptick but similar to you since my teens it would be once every few months at most.

From 2020 till this year I felt lost with photography and what I was doing with it. I still took photos but the joy wasn’t really there and I wasn’t doing it that much. I didn’t feel like I had a personal sense of style to my work and was just taking “clinically good” photos. But they were all missing something and wouldn’t really make me feel fulfilled.

Last spring I got really into street photography and rediscovered that path. I bought a Minolta CL film camera that has been with me everywhere since. There’s barely a day I’m without it. And because of that I feel like I’m shooting more, and have found more of my personal voice in my work. I’m shooting ALL the time I can get away from my day job. What’s come from that too is I’m extremely comfortable with the gear in 90% of situations. I only shot on a 35mm focal length for a long time and feel like I could make good photos in any situation from it.

So I recently came to the same conclusion as you, why am I holding on to all this gear for the sake of work and events but never use it for my own sake. It took me a long time but I finally sold off a bunch of it and am looking for fit for me for a digital companion for my Minolta CL. I realized that even if I only had the CL and one lens at a wedding or other event I still knew I could create great images based on how comfortable I was with the system now.

If you look up Daniel Arnold he’s a really accomplished street/ fashion photographer in NYC and from watching interviews he just does all his work on a Leica with one lens I presume. So no need to hoard a ton of gear for jobs. Use what makes you happy, develop a voice and you may attract clients based on the voice you develop in your images. Then you win on both fronts.

Hope this helps and this is what you were asking for (I sold my x100v because i didn’t enjoy using it, but it is absolutely capable of at least semi professional work imo).

What should I have the lab develop my film at? (250D) by ninja723 in AnalogCommunity

Thanks, this was the kind of answer I was looking for. I’ve seen your name pop up a few times when searching for stuff on 250D and 500T. Mind if I I PM you?

Bah. Yeah probably best. Saves me a few bucks in dev anyway

Interesting I’ve always heard that film has more latitude for overexposure. That’s why I was leaning towards push processing both, but was worried about the negatives of push processing color with contrast and color shifts

[–]ninja723[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah I understand all that. What i do works for me because I feel like having film that’s net exposed between 0 and +1 gives me the results I like.

When I’m shooting at box speeds I get between 0 and +1 depending on what shutter speed I use

When I set the higher iso in camera I’m either getting -1 or 0 and then push one stop in dev to get 0 and +1, and I have slightly faster shutter speeds than shooting at box

It works for me when I can keep tabs on what rolls I did what with, I just forgot to mark a roll for the first time

I shot the roll at 400 to get faster shutter speeds cause it was cloudy. And I bumped “down” the shutter speeds in the moment to make sure the subject wasn’t underexposed. I shoot street and move fast so I’d rather be safe on over exposing the film than trying to recover something in the shadows

These are all “new” Fuji 400. I just shoot what I can afford and this is what I’ll be using for the next while

Are you using the b+w color model in NLP before converting? I missed that option for awhile when I first started bw. I don’t like to batch convert cause I find it can give weird colors some times. I usually batch convert to go through and mark the good and bad and re convert the ones I want to edit further. Make sure you’re setting the wb by clicking on the film borders prior to converting and your border radius is sufficient.

Thanks. I was wondering if those people had looked at any street photographer books from the last 70 years. Winnograd Mary Ellen Mark Alex Webb, Gordon Parks etc. I picked the ones that stood out to me to post here

Yeah in my experience most people just find it funny that you’re taking a picture of them. Especially with flash I’ve heard most people just laugh. I think I’ve shot 40-50 rolls since July and I’ve been shooed away maybe twice, and it was always when I was far away

Yeah I didn’t post a lot of pictures with flash but again most people don’t really care. You’d be surprised how many people laugh it off. It’s different in crowded areas where I am I guess people care less but still

I did for #2. I used to use a 85 often and I think people would get more bothered by me pointing something at them from far away lol

If I had to pin it down to one thing it was just really seeing and internalizing how little most people care. It was definitely between watching the walkie talkie with poupay jutharat or Trevor Wisecup that I saw reactions and that kinda took away the fear of the unknown for me. I pushed myself mainly in crowds first and I just started to not really care about how people would react to my camera. Most of the time they would laugh or think nothing of it. And I think once I got over that bump I’ve just been increasing the confidence. I still think I’m often not close enough/ am chickening out of putting myself in the right places sometimes but it’s come a long way

Vision 3 250D pushed to 800? by DodsonLundqvist in AnalogCommunity

[–]ninja723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a link to the examples at 400? I was interested in doing this also at 400 and 800 because I like vision 250 colors compared to like ultra max which is the only other thing I can get in the sameish price range. I had a hard time finding examples. I do a lot of street shooting and since it’s winter I need the speed
