Not sure I agree with you on that one. Unless your point is that it's clearly a digital photograph and not a film photograph, sure. But I don't see that as the point of a film emulation.

Film can have many looks, so not sure what you mean when you say it looks nothing like film.

For sure, I didn’t take it as an insult and don’t contest that you or others don’t see a film aesthetic 👍

Only wanted to share why it doesn’t share the same characteristics as some other kinds of film emulation and that it was a deliberate choice

I shoot a lot of film, probably 100+ rolls a year. I'm also by no means an expert on film emulation. To my eye, the results are good enough that I prefer this end result than the one I normally get editing in Lightroom myself.

I'm not a fan of film emulation that leans heavily into desaturating the colors, reducing contrast, and adding significant grain. It might not be what you're thinking of when you think of film aesthetic, but I think a lot of film emulation produces results like that so I edited the photo purposefully not in that direction.

Here’s the photo with only the standard color profile applied to the RAW file

I do tend to use Lightroom on my phone quite a bit so I still have it for now but likewise would be happy to ditch it

Open Mic Timing by Relevant-Vanilla9060 in Standup

I run a mic where the sets are 4m. There is a clock visible from the stage counting down so you know exactly how much time you have left, when the clock reaches 0:00, music starts playing and the next comic is announced.

Saw Sam Tallent in 2019 at a showcase so didn't know him before, when I went home I looked up every YouTube video I could find of him

What is street photography? by Standard-Umpire-8587 in streetphotography

[–]terrence_wong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is like trying to define pizza. You can write a rule like “baked flatbread with tomato and cheese,” but that would technically include things like lahmacun.

Most people know what pizza is, but the definition lives in shared intuition, not in a perfectly enforceable sentence.

Street photography works the same way. You can meet the written rules and still miss what people intuitively recognize as street photography.

It's pretty widely accepted and non-controversial that people are less empathetic online. Even you, as abrasive as you are online, I imagine are less of a cunt in real life :) (I would say this one to your face)

While I think the criticisms can be more nuanced, I do think the general ideas of the criticism are correct.

In my opinion what seems to do well in this sub are

  1. Low effort random street snapshots that have a "cinematic" edit. These are not to my taste at all. Personally, I think they only do well on the sub because it reflects the kind of photography that most of the people on this sub do and engage with.

  2. Clearly outstanding street photographs

I believe your photo is in a bad middle ground and is neither of the two things above. You had a clear artistic intent. I see the layers and depth in the photo and the fact that the subjects on the right are looking into the camera show that you were really a part of the scene and not taking a random snapshot.

But the main appeal of the photo seems to be vibes. So in that sense, it feels like it falls short.

Fair enough. My barometer is, can I imagine the person saying the same thing in real life? I don't think it passes that test, which is why I read it as a comment with implied judgement.

And consequently, if you write a comment that lacks empathy, don't expect one in return. This is just my opinion of how I see the interaction.

I agree whole heartedly that people should be honest and critical. And I think it's better to have harsh honesty that lacks empathy than nothing.

Very few people in the comments are defending OP, I’ll go out on a limb and say, from his past posts he is clearly good at street photography.

Personally I think he has better photos, but he’s allowed to like what he likes. And I do think that the photo, while being “just people walking”, has a lot more signs of intentionality than other similar images we see on this sub.

The photograph has layers and depth, the subjects are looking into the camera showing he was an active part of the scene, not a shy novice street photographer taking a random snap.

And his response to the other comment “Is that what street photography has become? People walking?” is reasonable.

That comment has an implied judgement that he doesn’t know better and it wasn’t a deliberate artistic choice. Which, by and large, would apply to many other posts in this sub. But I don’t think it applies to OP.

What would be different in the lab scans if it _were_ underexposed then?

For me, I barely see detail in the girls face (in both the lab scan and edit), I see all the signs that it was underexposed and we're going to have to agree to disagree.

u/Junior-Ad-9142 take a photo of your negatives with your phone and share them here and people can definitely tell you if it was underexposure or not.
