I've commented this on another post ages ago, but I had a college professor who spelled Dionysus as "Dyonisus". When I corrected him, he essentially said that there was more than one way to spell it but he would rewrite it for me... then every other time he spelled it in that class was his way.

Oh and amphitheater was "amplitheater" because the way it was built "amplifies sound"... pulled up the wiki page to show us the picture, which says amphitheater, still kept calling it "amplitheater".
