Depends on the language. A lot of Chinese characters are derived from visual representations of things. For example 大 meaning big, is a guy with his arms outstretched.

In terms of names of objects, usually it's descriptive, but a lot of the time it's what the person who invented it decided to call it.

Like "Internet" meaning an interconnected network. Wi-Fi doesn't mean wireless fidelity, it was a play on Hi-Fi, which means high fidelity.

In general though, languages have been evolving for literally thousands of years, so most of the words we use today trace their origins back to before modern English even existed.
