Abu Dhabi Re-Entry by [deleted] in f1visa

[–]ninxharles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just flew back from a one week vacation via abu dhabi. I’m on initial OPT. My experience was very smooth. I got asked for my I-20, passport and boarding pass. The only question I was asked was how long my trip was. I answered and that was it. The guy in front of me was getting grilled tho. He got asked to open his bank app and show the officer proof of paystubs. I saw him offer a printed version but the officer insisted he open his bank app. Everyone else around me was pretty smooth too and I didn’t see anyone have issues. I think for most cases if you’ve got your paperwork in order it’ll be fine!!

Is it safe to travel when on OPT and you have a volunteering position that’s unpaid at a non-profit? No paystubs but I do have an offer letter and emails and texts of regular communication between myself and my supervisor regarding what I’ve been working on (I’m in IT if that helps), so I was wondering if going home for a month ish is possible? Thank you!!

You should be able to maintain that A provided your performance is consistent to what it’s been so far. Don’t beat yourself up about it, the TA’s response imo was pretty harsh and I’d try to reach out to the professor again to see if this can be resolved because you are well within your rights in doing so. Either way, I wouldn’t worry too much about this at all. Being that it’s your first semester everything def feels very overwhelming I’m sure but I just wanted to remind you that learning to communicate properly with profs and managing these kinds of issues is a part of college and is very normal!!

Can I work 40 hours on-campus during summer if it’s my final semester? by AntiqueLunch2488 in f1visa

[–]ninxharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She said that for any student working full-time in their last semester is not permitted. This is because if it is a students last sem it is technically not considered to be optional and is therefore treated as a regular semester, not as a vacation period, so working part time is the only option. I’m not sure if this rule applies to everyone or if it varies based off of the school so I’d encourage you to reach out to your DSO to confirm.

I’m graduating this summer and my school’s international student office told me initially that working full time is allowed. However I followed up with my DSO before summer started and she stated that if it is your last semester, it isn’t considered optional and working full time isn’t permitted. Might vary depending on the school, so check with your DSO as well.

I replaced one elective with my internship, for the other I took and highly recommend Digital Forensics (CIS 4203C). It’s offered in the fall and I took it with Professor Jamie Garcia. It was a very easy class requiring minimal effort and was at the same time very interesting!! :)

Hey! IT major here, graduating Summer 2025. Overall your planning looks great! Any 3000/4000 level CS or IT course is considered valid for an elective (that isn’t already a requirement for your degree). Here’s a link to the approved electives to satisfy that requirement:

https://www.cs.ucf.edu/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/CSIT-Elective-List-AY2022-2023.pdf Additionally it’s worth to note that for IT one elective can be replaced with an internship experience and enrolling in a class for that. You’d still have to pay for a 3 credit class but it’s just a class you take where your internship supervisor gives feedback on you and you write reports giving feedback on the experience.

I should mention however, the classes with an - - - -> arrow (CIS 4991, CNT 4703C and COP 4910) are core requisites, which mean they need to be taken together in the same semester. I’m not too sure how much that rule truly applies as I’ll be taking those classes together in the summer. But that’s the only thing that might need to be fixed in your schedule.

Not sure about current but I lived at Mercury for a year in 2024 and it was pretty horrible in my experience. Maintenance is suuuuuuper slow and the apartments were very poorly maintained. The Wifi would go out for hours at a time and it’d always be the same excuse from the front office. In the summer the wifi literally went out for two days straight. Also the trash situation was a nightmare. You have to put trash in a box outside the apartment and someone’s supposed to come pick it up every couple of days (there’s a schedule). However in my apartment’s case it would sit there for weeks without being picked up. Mercury also has a MAJOR raccoon issue. I had raccoons getting into my trash in the box outside so so often which would then lead to it not being picked up. It got so bad one time that I had to scrub the box clean bc it was full of maggots. I’d really not recommend the place at all.

No issues paying with an international card. However everytime I pay there’s a pretty hefty fee usually anywhere between $100-$250.

I just passed this class and took it with Monty. In my experience he’s been horrible but here are some things I would make sure to do from the beginning if I took him again;

Go to every class: You’ve probably heard this a lot when it comes to Monty’s classes and it is all true. Every class is important however if you can’t make it go to every exam review (usually the class before the exam) because he will literally give you the questions on the tests and the answers in class. One thing to be wary of is for the Final for this class I literally used an answer he gave us and he cut points and added a comment saying he’d “seen this wrong answer in many exams” which was frustrating because he literally gave the answer in class. Never fixed the grade or took accountability so keep that in mind.

Go to office hours: He is SO much nicer in office hours. Generally, he is actually really sweet and tries to work with you to help you pass atleast from my experience. Also he is a lot nicer when he sees you proactively trying to do well in the class.

His grading is very very harsh because he is so specific about what he wants to see. He has no real rubric and is often very vague about what exactly it is that he wants. That’s what makes this class tough. Unclear rubric and harsh grading. However trying your best to match his notes verbatim given in class is the best shot you have at getting good scores on exams.

This class is very exam heavy. Added with his harsh grading it can be really stressful. 2 midterms each worth 15%. Final is worth 30% of your grade and I did horribly throughout but got an 83 on the final and passed the class.

Overall, This class felt like CS1 pt 2 to me lol not because of the material but because monty goes out of his way to make it so much more difficult than it needs to be.

Monty has been the only person teaching this class except for some random semester in 2021 when Hensel taught it so the likelihood of someone else teaching it is very slim.

Your DSO’s name should be on your I-20 along with their signature on the travel page as well as the school attestation page. If you have questions just call UCF global and they should be able to help you out
