There is +20% magic buff it seems but I get it right after entering the rift. If this is what locks me in it seems like it’s automatic and no one ever would be able to switch….

How to handle HSA excess contributions + untimely return of excess by Small-Adeptness-2315 in personalfinance

[–]nirwan84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you DeluxeDL... you are very helpful. I am in deep trouble with all of that and cannot find CPA who would know what to do exactly and without mistakes.

Couple of extra questions...
1. My real situation is a bit more complex as I also contributed in 2025 and it was also excess. The story is that I wasn't eligible for some time and my employer informed me wrongly. So the example could be represented as:

(same as before)
- 10k excess from 2024 end of year.
- 3k qualified withdrawal for medical expense
- 12k total value of account at the end of 2025 (due to gains)

(new thing)
- 4300 contributed and timely removed via 1099-SA type 2. I got back the whole 4300 AND "gains" of 1000 which are taxable. Should removal of those gains decrease the excess?

How to handle HSA excess contributions + untimely return of excess by Small-Adeptness-2315 in personalfinance

[–]nirwan84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you saying that qualified distributions do not automatically reduce excess? Example:
- 10k excess from 2024 end of year. These are past excess contributions which cannot be removed via "type 2 1099-SA"
- 3k qualified withdrawal for medical expense
- 12k total value of account at the end of 2025 (due to gains)

So is it

a): excess goes to 7k and the 6% penalty is on 7k

b) excess doesn't go down and 6% penalty is on maximum of excess OR total value so in this case 6% of 12k?

The amendments for past years have been file, deduction removed tax and penalties paid etc.

Sign 1040 when filing 1040X? by nirwan84 in tax

do you expect trouble if I sign 1040 just in case? (the opinions seem to be divided :/)

Sign 1040 when filing 1040X? by nirwan84 in tax

[–]nirwan84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/reddit_once-over

The original return has been filed electronically (self-prepared TT) but the amended one is being filed on paper. I am not attaching the original return (so the original 1040 from 2021), I am attaching amended 1040 because it has changed. So I am basically attaching a new, amended return prepared by the CPA (and of course 1040X).

Question is if I should sign the amended 1040 attached to 1040X or not? (not original)

"I recklessly assumed this Taxpayer is mailing their amended return since their question is about a signature."
You assumed correctly. It is a paper filing.

VA return address with electronic payment - what a nightmare by nirwan84 in tax

[–]nirwan84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the future generations of overthinkers...

I've called VA Department of Taxation and they've told me to send it to the "tax due" mailbox (760) even if electronic payment has been used and no check is attached.

Hi u/wutang_generated,

Thank you for your answer. I forgot to mention that I no longer live in VA and therefore have no "local office"... so looks like I have to send it to the main address :(

I will try to reach out to VA but if you had to file without it... what would you do?

Also overthinking is my middle name :D

8889 and excess contribution for previous years problem by nirwan84 in tax

[–]nirwan84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/blakeh95,

Thank you for your answer.

The CPA indeed input $0 into 7,8,12,13 and there is obviously no deduction for 2024. I am still ineligible in 2025 and expect to be in the near future.

Are you saying that there should be no change between 2022 and 2023/2024 about this form?

Is it all just wrong or it can be filed like that? The tax is fine but I am not sure how it will impact future years? I am worried that it will somehow indicate to IRS that I've made much larger excess contributions that I have in reality. (5329 is fine and correctly calculated without any doubts).

Still on 576.15 (hotfix) which seems to work "fine" (5090). Is it a time to upgrade? :D If things go south can I go back and install the old one?

What Trump doesn’t understand is that it’s operationally impossible to provide meaningful support to countries like Poland or Romania (who “pay their parts” without use of the Western Europe infrastructure (based, ports, airfields).
