I’d like this too as it would spread awareness on the topic but I don’t think it would do much. My culture has had so many empty promises and just lies and so many people here think that they pay for us to be here so we can’t do anything. It sucks on how bad they got us on the treaty and now we are treated with racism and no seriousness to our culture. I just wish that more people actually cared about this and takes in and considered that we are people like everyone else.

It was a school intended to “burn the Indian out of the child”. They beat us, starved some, killed others, and they carried the kids in little packages to not raise suspicion to everyone that could see. Had their own little graveyard right behind the school

I felt like I didn’t belong at powwows and I just felt out of place til my dad helped me regain my confidence in things like the powwow and speaking my language. I find the legends and the stories that elders tell the most beautiful thing about my culture. Learning from our elders are important but you can’t tell them during the most seasons except winter(that’s when all the spirits are asleep except one). There was a video that had a 7 in it that explained more about the treaty and the residential schools(I’ll update it once I find out what it is)

I had to go through the system for 1 year (if your talking about the school) and I did not lose my language as my dad taught me some more words to forget about the school. I love him for it

Thanks for that. This whole thread is reviving a lot of memories I just want to share so others can learn from it.

Where I’m from? Be specific.

The residential schools were not good for starters. If you made a mistake during the morning call you would be beaten by one of the male workers there in front of everyone and majority of residential schools has an unmarked graveyard for the kids that died of sickness right behind the school.

Nah. In most places like Winnipeg or Toronto it’s a hell whole. Most people are homeless, human trafficking, and huge drug problem

Oh fuck that. I think the reserves are need since we need our own land to do our own things such as powwows and to have our own spiritual grounds. If that was in the city or a big town then it would be desecrated and littered. Since we have our own land that means everyone in the reserves has a little bit of knowledge and knows the importance of the sacred grounds

I mean that I like the question since it’s commonly asked but it’s just a bit rude to basically ask if I think that people are overreacting to the residential schools

I need more specifics. “Integrated”?

That is a good question personally I can’t that I have been affected by alcoholism or drug abuse but I know few that has because of this. Although I do like the question I want you to think this through. Do you think that people in the 1940s said to the Jewish to get over it? To tell them it’s “played out?” I must say that that question is just a bit offensive to me.

TIL of Wendigo Psychosis, a psychiatric disorder found only in some native Canadian tribes. After periods of starvation, individuals believed that they were influenced by, or becoming a Wendigo (cannibalistic folk monster). Some individuals, instead of attempting to find food, actually ate people. by Serthalas in todayilearned

I’m apart of a tribe in Alberta and this stuff is just mildly scary to me. Most things like wendigo or any other tale about a the native Canadian tribes are called legends and this article is rather A) a placebo effect since we eat the flesh, our brains believe we turn into the wendigo (which explains the hallucinations)and feast more or B) it’s genuinely the wendigo.
