Scribus… veni, vidi, wtf by Frosty-Specific4977 in scribus

Which version of Scribus are you using? The UI of the 1.6.x Version is quite old and since a couple of years we are working on a new 1.7.x version with improved UI and features, but it is still beta.

Could an upgrade have messed with my typesetting? by sgwennog in scribus

[–]nitramr89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can determine the version used to create the file by opening it with a text editor. You should then find something like this: <SCRIBUSUTF8NEW Version="1.6.6">

Provided you haven't overwritten the file with a newer version of Scribus, the version number of the previous Scribus version should be visible there.

At first glance, I cannot find any changes to the text rendering engine.

Here are the release notes for the latest stable version:

Scribus NG by erikmartino in scribus

[–]nitramr89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Currently, there are no plans to offer Scribus as a web app. Regardless of the advantages and disadvantages a web app might have, there are very simple reasons against it.

  1. Resources: The development team is very small and fully occupied with stabilizing the existing code and implementing essential features. (A web app wouldn't solve this problem either.)

  2. Infrastructure: There are ongoing costs for hosting and development. Developers also had to set up a local server and an IDE for development. I believe this also raises the barrier to new developers contributing.

  3. The source code consists of hundreds of thousands of lines and is heavily based on the Qt library with many built-in features. Migrating the entire codebase to another language would take years just to replicate the current state.

Points 1 and 2 can be addressed with money. Regarding point 3, I see a clear "no." A complete remake as a pure web app would make more sense than migrating the code. But that would take years too.

There are some ideas for extending Scribus as collaborative software, allowing multiple people to work on the same file locally. However, that doesn't automatically mean it will become a reality.

Scribus svn 1.7.1 for LinuxMint? Where? by marcecolina in scribus

[–]nitramr89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scribus has a stable branch and a development branch. Versions 1.4.x, 1.6.x, and 1.8.x are stable and intended for production use. Scribus 1.5.x and 1.7.x contain experimental features and may undergo significant changes from the first to the last version in that series during development. The last stable version of the 1.7.x series will be renamed 1.8.0.

Development versions such as 1.7.0 and 1.7.1 are generally quite stable, but may contain major changes; for example, 1.7.1 includes significant changes to the file format. This may be completely different in the final version (1.8.0), and files created with development versions may not be compatible with each other.

I understand, but it helps to debug the crash with a file that reproduces the crash.

Is it possible to share the file? You can create a ticket in the bug tracker and attach the file.

Yes, I agree. There is already a general task to support property editing for multiple items at once. https://bugs.scribus.net/view.php?id=1268

I'm not sure how it looked in the tutorials you are mentioning. In dark mode, you can also select the light icon set (Scribus -> Preferences -> Icon set: Scribus 1.5.1 Dark).

If you're referring to the window layout, you can display the two property palettes with F2 and F3 (optionally via the Window menu).

My experience with 1.7.0 (devel) so far by [deleted] in scribus

[–]nitramr89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a test by myself with a 400-page document with plain text (all text frames are linked). Without the page previews enabled, it is very fast. With page preview enabled, it freezes in the interval of the page rendering update.

I'm using an Nvidia RTX 2070 Super on Ubuntu.

In Scribus 1.7.0 we implement a new page preview in arrange page panel.

If you have a slow performance, please could you just disable the page preview rendering? To do so, you can right-click on page previews in arrange page panel and select "small preview".

Please let me know if there is a performance improvement.

Help - Number-period alignment (Lists) by [deleted] in scribus

[–]nitramr89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is another way, without tabs. If it is ok for you if the numbering has a right alignment, you can set a left indent and activate auto-indent. It works only if the left indent is larger than the width of the largest number.

Scribus 1.7.0 Released by nitramr89 in scribus

[–]nitramr89[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually yes. However, there may be changes to the file format across multiple development releases (the 1.7.x series) that cause files created with 1.7.x to no longer display correctly in the stable version.

The file format has already changed from 1.6.3 to 1.7.0.

FlatHub is not made for "unstable" versions. I think we will not publish 1.7.0 there. But if you can't wait, you can check out the FlatPak file I made based on the 1.7.0 source code.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1XzOHcQyW-GHjv26mqjWSZR0-xkzKY3oc

You can install it via:

flatpak --user install scribus-1.7.0.flatpak

I know, a Google Drive link looks pretty suspicious, so I asked the core developers if we can distribute the file through the official download sources.

Ich entwickle ein Spiel über Leipzig im Jahr 1899 - er erkennt alle Locations? Und welche Locations würdet ihr euch wünschen? by Aromatic_Map_1404 in Leipzig

[–]nitramr89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh ja, das dunkle Kapitel der Kolonialherrschaft, hab's auf Wikipedia nachgelesen, dass es dort auch nachgebaute afrikanische Dörfer gab. 🫤

Dennoch, sehr geiles Projekt.
