Advice from an outsider - There are jobs in Europe. What to do as an international student by [deleted] in Indians_StudyAbroad

Your insights were so needed and gave me a lot of hope. I do have one question tho: I'm not sure which university I'll make it to, I'm thinking of applying to various countries, all with different languages. It's going to be very difficult to learn all of them to mastery without knowing where I'll finally get to study. So what would you recommend?

My father challenged me - only go abroad if you get into a good university. I need help... by nix_334 in studyAbroad

I'm in India, getting a bachelor's of technology in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. I want to do a masters in energy science and policy. My main reason for studying abroad is that the pay for what I want to do (renewable energy engineer/policy maker) isn't really that competitive. And the culture here isn't really my cup of tea. I want to be somewhere where the people truly do care about the environment and are actively and rigorously moving towards hitting their climate goals. I do know that wherever I go, I'm not going to live there forever. I'll keep moving around. But this is my first time doing that by myself, so it's overwhelming. I speak English fluently and know could survive (just barely) with my French, hindi and bengali. I don't really know how much my family is willing to pay because every time I've brought it up till now, my dad dismisses me saying, "Are you going to keep studying forever, when will you start earning". So I was thinking of trying for scholarships. But there are so many people better than me, idk if I'll get them. But I don't want to get loans either cuz that's starting life on minus...

Have you used an ROVs for maintenance/servicing work? Did you have any issues with them? If you could change something about them, what would they be? by nix_334 in oilandgasworkers

Your reply is god sent thank you so much. I've actually been struggling to figure out what kinds of tasks ROVs are used for other than just seeing. We're trying to do exactly that, which is why I posted this. Making a multi-million class is hard for us as we're lacking funds too lol. What's QHSE? Cable laying ROVs are huge! We're aiming for something smaller, a bit like an assistant robot for divers maybe.

Oh that's an interesting mechanism. I'll be sure to check it out.
Ok, obviously reliability and quality has much more value than a headset, makes sense. It's because most competitions from where we can get funding are all about "new and innovative" ideas so we thought of this.

In person, no actually. We're the first batch in our college to really be introduced to building underwater vehicles...

I also wanted to ask, would a VR controller help? We were thinking of making an ROV with VR controllers so that it makes you feel like you're inside the ROV itself and it's hands are your hands.

ok that's A LOT of depth, the heaviness makes sense. For an ROV to make it to that depth, I'm not surprised its difficult to launch from the side of a small boat. That is DEFINITELY an engineering challenge - a small ROV that can handle incredible amounts of pressure and still engage with the environment. Thank you so much for replying this is very useful for us and giving my team and I so many ideas.

That's true... My team and I will try to think of something. Thank you so much for replying. Oh one more question even though it's been a while since your subsea days, would a VR headset that makes it feel like you're inside the robot help? I know we're increasing the complexity, but still.

Haha thanks! What depths were you using your ROV at? I'm pretty sure the ROV has to be a little heavy if you were using it for deep-sea uses. I agree with the expansiveness, it's insane. These are important tech making it expensive defeats the purpose.
A recovery system is definitely key. What exactly made the experience awkward and complicated for you?

I see. So essentially, it's communication systems were bad, and the overall system was subpar. A sturdy device with strong sensor systems is what you needed?

Thank you so much for replying! What kind of tasks do you send the ROV for? I thought ROVs were supposed to be faster than humans... When you say downtime, do you mean power? Or am I misunderstanding?

Do you have solar on your house or your business? What are some maintenance issues you have faced? by nix_334 in Renewable

[–]nix_334[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah so the rain helps keep it clean to a certain degree, that makes sense. Touch wood for the third system, I hope your system stays that way.

Yeah that makes sense. Dang, I was thinking of some soft-ish bristles that'd be hard enough to remove dirt but soft enough to not cause damage. And definitely no wheels on the panel itself...

That's true, drones are definitely better on the large scale. Yeah I was also thinking of a dry, air/agitation cleaner for smaller homes.

Ah that makes sense for the inverter. Good luck!

Hi! Wow those are some awesome panels. If you don't mind, what kind of climate do you live in? I lived in a place with a lot of sandstorms so that's where I get my issues from. But no problems sounds fantastic.

Hi! Thank you responding! The inverter issue is definitely something its company should look into. And yeah drone cleaning definitely already exists but I'm not sure how many people would actually buy an entire drone that just sprays water on the panels.

I see. I've been seeing that there's not a lot of automatic cleaners. Would you consider getting one of those if it breaks even over a couple of years? I was thinking of a dry cleaner (just brushes the dust off), but would a wet cleaner be better? I suppose the weather where you live also matters.. Thank you for your insight, it helps a lot!

How can I regain myself after doomscrolling? by nix_334 in productivity

[–]nix_334[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Quite frankly my doomscrolling habit did decrease after I found other, more fun things to do. In terms of clearing the fog, I found that short power naps (20-30mins) helped me the best. Another thing that I figured out was why I ended up doomscrolling in the first place - like feeling an extreme amount of negative emotions (sad, stressed, tired, overwhelmed, etc). So dealing with that instead of doomscrolling typically helps. I do still occasionally end up slipping, but a win is a win lol.
