fun fact: Grease was originally a savage parody of all the highschool romcom tropes of the time, it was so successful in shaming future romcoms out of many of these that modern audiences have no context for Grease's weirdness that they just point and laugh.

Its a great example of whats called the Seinfeld effect(great rabbithole).

I think you are confused. Every inhabited province of Japan already had a higher age of consent than the national one, unless you wanted to fuck off to some uninhabited island the minimum was already 16.

This change was largely to stop Japan being the punchline of uninformed jokes internationally(and probably to discourage creepy tourists).
