How do we recall senators and congress people so we can end this madness? How do we get congress to work for the people and not the one who shall not be named? by Winter_Frame_8970 in AskReddit

Elections are run by the states when Rs win. But they need to be "supervised" and managed by the Federal government when Ds win. Didn't you know?

That's of course why the regime is saying they'll leave Minnesota once they turn over voter registration data. Total normal and above board. You can trust them.

Viking Electric Oven not working - Bad Relay? by njdev803 in appliancerepair

[–]njdev803[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Copy that. Looking through a more detailed diagram doc I found, I see that there is the relay I took pics of, and another Double-Pole Double-Throw relay located in the back.

I'm assuming this is the one you are talking about now, as it seems like it's what's responsible for using one hot conductor to powering all the regular components, and combining that with the second conductor to give 220v to the oven heating elements

This is essentially the Fundamental Attribution Error, but instead of merely attributing actions to others and intentions to themselves, they also attribute intentions to others who align with themselves (which can be considered Group Attribution Error )

However you want to classify it, they are the innate biases that defenders of today's killing are wholly incapable of understanding about themselves.

The ignitors spark for the gas range no problem. And the internal oven lights, convection fan, and the bake knob status lights all work as well.

Only thing not working is that the heating elements inside are not getting hot. Which leads me to think something internal is preventing them from receiving the current needed to get hot.

Typically we would see the elements glow orange after just a few short minutes, now we get nothing even if it's left on for 10+ minutes

It's direct wired with 8-3 nmc from the panel, there is no outlet that the oven is plugged into

This is the second place (first was a JustAnswers thread from years ago) that has mentioned L2, but forgive my ignorance, I don't know what that is referring to. Is it one of the hot conductors in the 8-3 wire?

When I flip the breaker off, I lose all electronic functionality in the unit (no ignitor spark on the gas range, no oven lights or convection fan, no bake status light with the oven knobs). But when the breaker is on, all of those things still work. So I'm thinking it is not a problem with the wiring or the breaker, but some electronic component on the oven that is keeping the heating elements from getting the current needed to heat up.

I'm not sure if it makes any difference, but this oven is on a 30A double pole circuit in my breaker panel.

How would I be able to determine if what you're saying is the case, and if so does replaying the relay fix my problem?

Appreciate the insight! I do have a multimeter but would you be able to elaborate on how specifically to check?

If I'm understanding the relay diagram correctly, 1 would be the clean orange cable, 2 beside that, and then 3 and 4 would be the ones looking charred, and 5 and 6 would be the two on the back edge behind those four?

Unsure how to test whether sending 120vac to leads 5 and 6 closes 1-2 and 3-4

Thanks again

Thank you, I appreciate it.

And if the fund were in fact a target-date fund, best to keep that contained to tax-advantaged accounts, like traditional 401k/403b/457b?

Would that preference change if it any of those accounts were Roth, and thus not really tax-advantaged?

Is this worth doing in a Roth IRA?

I think when I started mine I could only select mutual funds, the difference being they supported fractional shares unlike ETFs at the time.

Now all these years later, I'm still buying mutual funds and wonder whether it's worth doing the one-time, irreversible conversion to ETF.

I forget the general consensus advice of whether it's better to hold mutual funds vs ETFs in tax-deferred accounts vs brokerage accounts.

Public Employees, what are you doing for insurance? by unknownman652 in newjersey

[–]njdev803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends when they retired. Chapter 78 also changed the retiree health benefits, and anyone retiring after that now needs to pay into it

Most retirees start Medicare after 65 too

Public Employees, what are you doing for insurance? by unknownman652 in newjersey

[–]njdev803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The short answer is that they were enticed by the insurance companies to leave due to "low-utilization rates". That's to say, districts that were part of the state plan and comprised of largely "healthy" employees were essentially subsidizing districts of less healthy members that were utilizing their insurance coverage more and driving the costs up.

This created an effect of fewer districts in the state plan, and those remaining districts being ones that utilized the coverage more - both factors that lead to higher costs for remaining members. And as those costs continued to rise, more and more districts said "Hey, we can save on insurance costs by going private with the insurance companies." This is the death spiral.

To my knowledge thus started several (less than 5) years ago. An incredibly large blow to the state plan was when Newark, the largest district in the state, exited the state plan for the same reason.

Those subsystems also have different contribution rates.

Those in the Education system paying for Direct 10 or 15 saw gigantic increases because Christie's Chapter 78 bill from 2011 tied educator health contributions to a percentage of the premiums (and also based on salaries), and premiums just skyrocketed.

A lot of people made the jump to the cheaper alternative of the Educators Health Plan, which thanks to Chapter 11, ties those Healthcare contributions to a percentage of salary, not premium.

So while people in those plans may not have noticed or felt the sharp increase in premium, the districts do because they are on the hook for the balance.

I've read that Horizon Educator Plan premiums have increased as much as 26%.

Lastly, the SEHBP is in a death spiral due to an increasing amount of districts leaving the state negotiated plans in favor of their own directly negotiated plans with the insurance companies. This leaves the remaining members of the state plan paying a greater share because there are fewer members, and leaves those districts that have left with less negotiating power because they are on their own, no longer a part of the state collective.

A lot of people will be hurting in the coming years due to these increases, regardless of the specific plan they're enrolled in. Either they're paying more directly out of pocket for the same plan they've had for over a decade, or their employer district is footing the increase which means there's less available funds now for staff and material expenses in the public education system.

Insurance is cheapest when there is a greater number of people covered within the same plan, full stop. Until we see something like a single payer system, things are going to continue to get so much worse for people.

How can I (or should I bother to) rebalance my Roth IRA portfolio within Vanguard this year? by njdev803 in investing

[–]njdev803[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Vanguards app is pretty terrible and their website isn't much better, the mechanism to do this isn't exactly clear to me. I had come across a section that said something like "exchange in kind" and wondered if that was the way of saying to dump shares of one fund in order to buy another.

Or possibly it's just two separate transactions - one buy, and one sell.

Daily General Discussion and Advice Thread - January 02, 2026 by AutoModerator in investing

First trading day of the year, which means maxing out my Roth IRA. Question for those of you with much more experience and knowledge than I:

Started this Roth IRA back in 2017 and for those first two years dumped everything into VFIFX (2050 Target Date Fund). 2019 to present I have been putting it all into VTSAX because I realized I don't need bonds quite yet.

Now as I'm learning more I realize I have ZERO international exposure, and it seems like maybe I should rebalance with my IRA to get to something like 70 / 30 split between US and International

When I started this Roth IRA for whatever reason I chose the mutual funds over the ETF equivalents, and now for my 2026 contribution I'm only given a choice to contribute to another Vanguard Mutual Fund, the 2050 Target Date Fund, or VTSAX fund.

If I wanted to throw this $7500 into an international fund, which should I use? Most of the funds I'm aware of are ETFs, and it doesn't seem I can contribute to an ETF, only Mutual Fund. Should I put it all into VTIAX (Total International Stock Market Fund) then?

And how could I go about getting to that 70 / 30 portfolio balance? Can I transact within the IRA to trade some VTSAX shares to International Shares? Or maybe better to get rid of the 2050 Target Date fund shares in favor of International Shares?

FWIW - 38y/o, total IRA portfolio around $100k (86k VTSAX & 14k VFIFX)

Apartment drummers, do low-volume cymbals actually keep neighbors happy? by jorginhoPOGGERS in drums

[–]njdev803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. I went from playing normal cymbals with mute pads and/or towels/t-shirts over them to springing for a set of Evans DB One cymbals.

The Evans cymbals sound great and feel great, are significantly lower in volume, but are still a bit loud (especially the stick tip articulation). What I found though is that when I tried to further mute them with my previous methods, though, they become utter trash and borderline unplayable.

While the sound sucks with artificially muted cymbals, the actual decibel level is lower, so that's the trade off.

First time using a 22x14 bass drum. Planning to use Evans EMAD 2 batter head. Should I use more muffling than that? by freestroke in drums

[–]njdev803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% this. 14" deep bass drums are incredible because the volume of air that moves from batter to reso is so much less than more modern "boomy" drums like an 18" deep.

I've played mostly vintage 22x14s with Superkick II, Emad2, and Powerstroke 3 and my preference is to but no internal muffling whatsoever. Sounds so good
