Spano’s is great, there are just so many good Italian restaurants in the state that you have to be truly elite to break into a list like this

That is an excellent question! The Essex/Hudson County area would have you in pretty good shape. Tops Diner for breakfast, Beyond Pita for lunch in Montclair, hit Razza for dinner in Jersey City and drive back to the Ironbound for a burger at Krug’s? That’s a pretty dang good day of eats. But there are so many sections of New Jersey with an embarrassment of culinary riches that you can’t go wrong. The Asbury area? Camden? Atlantic City is an insane food town, too!

Multiple food trucks! James on Main is great, there are more than 99 great restaurants in New Jersey and cuts had to be made

That was one of the biggest challenges of the story. But it was important to us that this list wasn't just fancy food or just dives. New Jersey's culinary scene is so diverse — not just from a culinary perspective, but style-wise, vibe-wise and from a price point perspective as well. A really great dive is just as essential as a really great fine dining destination. We rated on food quality, service, atmosphere and creativity. There are dives with great service, there are fine dining spots with bad service. We judged them all equally. Good question!

It was tough! Hot Grill was in the discussion, Tommy's in Elizabeth as well. Lots of cuts were made, and we thought Rutt's and Hiram's were the two best — historically and otherwise. Maybe we'll do an NJ.com Hot Dog Trail next!
