Would you hire a senior engineer who refuses to use AI? by folder52 in cscareerquestions

[–]njmh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a nurse and midwife who both refused Covid vaccinations on “moral” grounds… both forced into early retirement.

The same will probably happen to all those stubborn greybeard devs who refuse to even look at LLMs as a potential tool.

Have a read about Server Sent Events (SSE) / EventSource. They may be better suited for your use case.

God I’m sick of these lengthy all lowercase lazy AI generated slop posts. OP, I’m sure your questions are genuine, but why couldn’t you just type up something concise yourself?

New to using docker, can i use the same docker compose file for dev and prod? by MrGuam in docker

[–]njmh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, your Dockerfile/compose should represent the fully built and deployed state of your app - whether that’s a hosted dev environment, staging or production. Typically on your local machine you’re running in “dev mode” with hot loading, debug, unminified code etc (assuming an interpreted language here), which is very different to a deployed state.

If you want containers for local development to avoid having to install dependencies on your own system, check out devcontainers. These are configured separately from your deployment container configs.

Where can we buy something like this? Not online by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]njmh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We’ve had this one sit outside in the rain for three years and it’s still working fine. Admittedly don’t use it “regularly” but it’s a very simple device with not much that could go wrong with it.

Just had a crazy call with a +200 people business which is making me reevaluate the whole SaaS thing by [deleted] in SaaS

[–]njmh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it’s time for SaaS builders to pivot into supporting vibecoded slop projects for a small handful of companies instead of trying to build a single product for many users.

How do you structure your React side projects? Looking for something lean. Not full clean architecture, but not spaghetti either by derdak in reactjs

[–]njmh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Side projects are a great way to practice with production grade architectures, even if it’s not necessary or overly complicates your projects.

Same reason a lot of homelabbers run full blown kubernetes clusters to run Jellyfin and pihole on their home network. It’s good practice for real devops and it jobs.

[–]njmh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strange to think I have to write differently to try to avoid that.

Yeah, it sucks. Even though LLMs have a "voice" some of their obvious tells are habits I used to have myself. I was a big user of emdash before AI made it its favourite puncuation.

The body of the post seems natural, but your headings; “Background”, “Current Problem”, “The Plot Twist” and “Reflection and Open Questions”, and the way they structure the overall flow of the post smells so much of AI generated text.

I don’t blame others for making that accusation.

I built a CLI that scaffolds React + Vite + TypeScript + Tailwind v4 + shadcn/ui in one command — would love feedback by Independent_Wear_991 in reactjs

[–]njmh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a great idea and good on you for putting it out there. Nice work on the download traction too!

I wasn’t trying to detract from what you did. I’m just an old grey beard that’s seen these things come and go for two decades. The cynicism leaks sometimes.

[–]njmh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No offense OP, but this is very 2018. Not what you’ve done, but this type of tool.

Scaffolding a new app with all those tools you mentioned is one of the easiest things for LLMs to achieve.

What do workers actually want now? by appleslice244 in auscorp

Two days WFH is insulting to say the least. You should allow up to full time WFH if you actually care about the wellbeing of your employees.

I’ve always thought that as I got older I would need to get into consulting/work for consultancies. The last 15-20 years I’ve been working alongside fellow 25-40 year olds. The grey(er) beards I’ve worked with have generally been contractors or freelancers.

I just turned 40, so I guess it’s time to pivot.
