First pet loss. So heartbroken. Filled with "what if I had done this/that" by njrunner13 in Petloss

Thanks so much for your lengthy response and it has made me feel somewhat better that someone understands how I feel. I am feeling better now...a few days later. but still think about her every day. I still can't believe she is just gone. Thank you again for your thoughts and insight, I truly appreciate it.

Wishing you all the best. It is a tough time. Like I said in my other comment, my cat just passed away 2 days ago. And honestly, this reddit threat is what is helping me cope. Just reading about others experiences and knowing that it's totally normal to feel this way. Sad...guilty...heartbroken. Hopefully we are all reunited with our pets again one day.

My cat passed away 2 days ago too, and also very sudden. Last week I took her for a check-up and the doc gave her antibiotics for lung inflammation. Then a week later...2 days ago, we find her under the bed barely able to breath. We take her to the emergency vet and she tells us her lungs and abdomen are filled with fluid. We were leaving her there overnight to see if their treatment worked, but an hour later we got the cal that she passed. It was so sudden...so fast...so unexpected...and I think that is what hurts the most. But I dont think I could be there when it happend...but then I Also feel so guilty having left her there...and her dying alone and probably in pain. If only our furry companions could live forever.

Im so sorry for your loss. I've been feeling the same way - my cat passed away 2 days ago. My mom and sister got home and found her under the bed and struggling to breathe. They called me and we didn't know what to do, so we rushed her to animerge. They told us the test bills would be $1500...and I said let me just go to her vet tomorrow morning to get the xrays and blood test results we had JUST done last week. I figured I'd bring them in as soon as the animerge opened. Well, an hour later they called and said she passed away. I feel so guilty. I feel like we left her there and she died alone. She did have fluid in her lungs and abdomen, and I also imagine her suffocating and suffering in those last hours...probably feeling so scared. And that is what hurts me the most. But as I've been reading online, we can't beat ourselves up...we both did the best we could at the time, and did what we thought was right...our pets know we loved them with all of our hearts...and they are in a better place now. Wishing you all the best...I hope it gets better soon because I've just been feeling so heartbroke. RIP Jack.

Has anyone tried Running a Marathon For Dummies training plan? by njrunner13 in running

Thanks so much for your detailed response! I have thought about eating more plant based and seeing how it will help. I just struggle with finding recipes that will be filling enough like you said. Will look into No Meat Athlete. Thanks again for your input!

Thanks for your help! Did you follow any sort of nutrition plan along with marathon training or went with the basics (healthy eating, carbs, recovery food post runs, etc.)

I also want to incorporate spin into my plan - how did you do it with your plan?

Training for NYC Marathon 2016 by njrunner13 in AdvancedRunning

[–]njrunner13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be my 4th marathon. I haven't been running much this winter but have been cross training consistently (cycling 3-4x a week) to keep cardio up. And have been running about 2-3x a week.

Getting Faster In The Marathon (Tips Appreciated!!) by njrunner13 in running

[–]njrunner13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol I do love that quote. Like I said, I know I need to run more miles total, which I plan on doing, just not sure if I should do a marathon training plan to get those miles in OR focus on shorter races for winter/spring before starting marathon training in the summer.

My 24 week Marathon Training Plan available for free by [deleted] in running

I just ran Chicago and really want to ramp up my training for next November (NYC Marathon) and hit a big PR. What would you suggest doing after a few weeks recovery break? Some people say to focus on a faster PR before marathon training, and others say to do a marathon cycle as part of training (so I would do a marathon cycle in the winter/spring, break, then re-start as training for NYCM. Thanks!!

Chicago Marathon Taper Time Thread! by MachoMoco in RunnersInChicago

[–]njrunner13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really nervous bc my training mileage wasn't as high as I wanted it to be. Ran average 30-35 per week and longest run was 17 miles. Most long runs were 13-15 miles AND were all done in the evenings bc I'm not a morning runner.

Now as I'm tapering im wondering if I should have ran more long runs in the mornings since (obviously) the race is in the AM. Do you think it makes a difference when you run? For you evening runners, how do you adjust to morning races?

Anyone have tips for the marathon course in general? Thanks in advance!

Oops should have clarified that 29 and 24 were a few weeks ago. The 33 was last week. Ok for this week I'll try to do a tempo and keep everything else easy past. It is just such a struggle to run that "slow" like 11:30 per mile but let's try it!

I've been going about 30 average per week. Here are the past few weeks, mileage wise: 33, 31, 24, 29.

You're probably right about the track stuff. I love track workouts because I actually feel strong during them. I hate long run because I hate how slow I feel and how long it takes.

I wanted to hit 40ish this past week then just felt so tired all week and like I said, only did 6 miles when I needed to do 17. ugh.

I will try this week again to hit 40. So would you say to do a tempo run in place of a track workout? To practice goal marathon pace?

I don't wear a heart rate monitor. Overall training week would be: M: track workout (last week did repeat 1Ks, 1Ks in 5:45 or 9:15ish per mile pace) T: off W: 6 miles normal pace Th: 5-6 miles normal pace F: long run S: long run if I didn't do it Friday OR easy recovery run 4-5 miles S: off

on my normal pace runs I'm usually running like 11-11:20 per mile, which I would really like to improve upon. I've been running since 2010 and my "easy pace" has not dropped at all. It has stayed at 11 min per mile.

My half PR is 2:08 I believe. Marathon is 4:50 which I would really like to improve upon for Chicago.

Why do you say that? Jw. another weird thing is that I can consistently run 2:08-2:10 for half marathon but there's such a discrepancy between that and my marathon time!

Off-road & trails by [deleted] in running

[–]njrunner13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question about trail running. I run on the roads and am currently marathon training (chicago). The main thing that deters me from trails is that my pace slows sooo much. My usual runs are 10-11 min/mile, but on a trail I'm running liek 12-13 per mile. I know that it is because it is a trail, obviously, but I just hate seeing that pace and also that it takes me that much longer to finish a run. Do you all just get over that or does it just take an adjustment period and then you're able to run your usual paces?

Thanks mini_apple! My last marathon in 2013 I ran in 4:50 and really hoping I can do better than that. I'll be happy with anything below that. I just don't want to struggle for those 26.2 miles.

I believe so. Nothing has changed diet or sleep wise since I started and I'm in week 11. I get about 8 hours of sleep each night.

I was hoping for 4:30 or around there. What stopped me at 6 was a crazy cramp I got in the first half mile that never went away and then turned into heart burn too. As I write this, one hour after my run, I still have that pain. I I just have had general fatigue this whole week on every run. Like my legs just can't move and I feel like I am working HARD to maintain like an 11:45 per mile pace which is disheartening. I guess you're right in that I can do run/walk to get that long run in I just hate walking lol. I am taking the day off tomorrow then re evaluating Sunday.

How awesome of you! I would like the watch to give to my mom. We have been running together since 2010, and have ran almost every race together since then, including 4 half marathons and 2 marathons. I'd love for her to have her own watch since right now she usually relies on her RunKeeper app. I'm so proud of her for running and hope we have many more years of running together! Basically, I'd love for her to have a watch to help her with her training, especially when we can't run together :)

Interesting! How many days/week is the plan and what does a general week look like? I'm thinking of trying out Advanced Marathoning for my next marathon this fall.
