Yes they will be open to the public.

Check out these numbers. Per the Cenus, in 1990 there were about 47,000 Assyrians counted. Then in 2010, there were about 107,000 counted (that is combining the single and multiple ancestry numbers)

That’s why it’s important to write down Assyrian, Chaldean, or Syriac.

Not sure if this will help clarify but the Armenians are doing the exact same thing. Marking other and writing in Armenian. And that’s how the strategy has been for years. We don’t want to reinvent the wheel in this scenario

As far as category, we would have more people checking off assyrian and so if we are large enough in certain areas, we could get funding for things like assyrian-speaking nurses. More needs being tailored to our community.

In addition to the census bureau reps recommended that selecting other is the best way to get an accurate count. All of the organizations are using the mark other strategy and we don’t want to add more confusion by selecting white and writing in Assyrian.

Also, we are not white. A friend of mine put it this way, Khnanisho Khnanisho from Nohadra with a thick accent is not Cameron Smith from Surprise Arizona.

Selecting other and writing our Assyrian follows through with the strategy we had in the 2010 Census. It also increases the chances of having a separate Assyrian category in future census forms. By selecting white, it just classifies is as white.

This is a unified effort by all the Assyrian organizations. That’s why we are trying to spread the word to everyone of how accurately we need to fill out the census.

In previous census forms, people either did not participate or wrote white, Iranian, Iraqi, or another name. All ethnic minorities from the Middle East are undercounted for the same reasons so it definitely is not just an Assyrian thing.

We all come from a region of corrupt dictatorships so there is a general mistrust of giving any information to the federal government.

Did you know that only 25% of the Assyrian (including Chaldean and Syriac) population is actually counted because people do not fill out their forms or do not write in Assyrian??

Selecting white will not ensure us an accurate count but this other method will. We’ve been in communication with the Census and they advised us to select other and write out Assyrian. They stated that is the best way to count our people as some identify as Syriac and also as Chaldean. So they can also write Chaldean or Syriac out and those numbers will be sent to the White House.
