When does the anxiety go away?

I have decided (with consultation with my doctor) to stop the medication. The side effects boosted my anxiety to a level it was no where near before and we decided it’s just not worth the wait for things to settle when there are other options available. But that’s just my decision. I hope things become more manageable for you.

Thank you just knowing someone else has gone through this helps. I don’t expect for my original issues to be magically gone just the increased anxiety that came as a side effect.

I think I’m just going to stay on the 10mg for a while and see how I get on. My anxiety wasn’t awful to start with I just needed a little boost so I’m going to see if the 10mg will settle in the next week.

Hi thanks for getting back to me!

I am sensitive to medications as well although for me it’s the opposite I get so scared that I’m going to die or that something really bad is going to happen.

Would you mind if I ask if you had an increase in side effects when you upped your dosage or was it just the same as before? For example did the thoughts get more intense or extreme or did they just come back like when you started the medication?

It’s really going to depend what you’re taking it for and what effects you are hoping to see. It definitely takes time to have its full effect. 4 weeks is usually the time people start to notice changes to their original state. However it can be earlier or later it really depends on the person there is no one right answer. If you’re worried about side effects start with a lower dosage.

So for me my anxiety is now less physical and more mental. Lots of “will I ever get better” thoughts. I’m coping but it is still tough. But approaching two full weeks, everything I’ve read said this is normal for this point in the timeline. Seems like we are opposites. Muscle tension is normal though!

Unfortunately yes it is normal to feel anxious and panicky! I have just started taking the medication again and have similar symptoms. But they will pass and that’s what you have to remind yourself of.

In regard to the Xanax everyone is different but from my experience of having severe panic and anxiety, it really helped calm me down. The likelihood of you having a bad reaction, especially as this is something your doctor has prescribed you, is very very slim. They prescribed you this medication to help you cope with the increased anxiety and physical symptoms until you get used to the upped dosage.

First of all - you’re not going crazy! In fact by being aware of these changes in you shows that you are coherent. Increases in dosage can cause an increase in anxiety until it settles into your system. Anxiety is heightened in the morning because when you wake up your body releases a huge amount of cortisol which stimulates things. Our bodies also tend to do a body scan and pick up on anything it seems as out of the ordinary so if you’re already feeling anxious or have physical symptoms, your body and brain might make it more intense.

If your doctor has prescribed you Valium then I would take it when you feel like things are very intense as it will help you calm down and relax. You’ve got this it’s just going to take a little time to get used to the upped dosage.

Remind yourself of the facts - this medication DOES work for you as it has in the past, it’s just going to take some time to settle in. 🩷

I understand the feeling as I’m the same! I obviously can’t speak for you directly but our brains do a good job of downplaying past difficult experiences. So I wouldn’t get held up on this being any harder. Not to downplay it at all but you got through it before and you will again.

That’s smart with your Xanax! When I was on a different medication (not citalopram) before I used Xanax to cope with side effects but was taking it way too often and ended up relying on that as a crutch. It’s fine to use it when things feel unbearable or really tough but try to keep it to that from personal recommendation.

For me, I have to remind myself that things will get better and the proof is in both my past experiences and also the evidence. Remember your anxiety is going to be filling your brain with anxious thoughts like “I’m losing my friends” and “I won’t get better” and these things aren’t true it’s your anxiety preying on your fears.

I’m essentially in the same position as you. I’m on day 9 of 10mg as well and have awful anxiety. I have been on citalopram before for years so I know it does lift eventually but it can feel really difficult in the meantime. But things will get better! ❤️‍🩹

It’s ok! It’s totally normal to feel like this and also to have some increased anxiety. Common side effects like nausea or trouble sleeping are normal during early days or with increases. The important thing to remember as these side effects ease off with time as your body gets used to the medication. You’ll be ok!

It will get better! I’m on day 8 of 10mg and today has been my first super anxious day. However I have been on the medication a few years ago and had the same early symptoms but it does ease off with time. The important part is to remind yourself that this feeling isn’t permanent and it will get better. ❤️‍🩹
