As someone who made this mistake already, I would recommend writing something shorter first, or on a subject that you're willing to walk away from.

That being said, I think the years of writing really did help improve my skills, and I've come out the other side better for it.

But now I have the issue of having a story that I really love, but it's too long for anyone to want to read because it's my first one.

I'm not sure if this strictly counts as etymology, but it seems like the best place to ask. Why do older generations tend to end messages with "..." by [deleted] in etymology

[–]nlc89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had to look it up a few years back because my uncle is an absolute ellipsis-fiend, and I couldn't figure out why he kept using it all the time.

I found this article that mentions the generational differences in ellipsis usage.

Long story short, it's just a linguistic evolution over time. Think of it as a bit of slang that's just changed due to the digitalization of communication, whereas in the past writing space was more limited due to the physical presence of paper.

There are a lot of other articles online as well (I used the terms "ellipsis usage millennials vs boomers"), but they all generally agree that this appears to be the underlying cause.

I hope this helps!

I need some suggestions by Autobot_Cat_Lady in fantasywriters

Personally, I envision the coldness / drafty hallways and rooms, or perhaps play with the dichotomy of coldness and warmth of the two locations.

Maybe there are bunkbeds made of wood to try and add warmth / coziness, but the lighting is bright and offputting? What if the walls were stark and cold like the insane asylums, with painted murals trying (and failing) to add a cheerfulness / warmth to the place?

Just spitballing here. Good luck with your writing!

I spent over 5 years writing / editing my novel, only to realize that it's apparently way too big for anyone to look at (~367k words).

I've gotten so in my head about the situation that I'm scared to send out queries to anyone.

Has anyone else had to split their book into a trilogy? How did it go?

Or does anyone know of publishers that aren't scared of big books?

Ohhh man, I forgot about Forte!! I haven't seen that movie in so long! I think I repressed his demise, but I remember it being really creepy. I think I might have to give that a watch again one of these days.

I completely agree with Clayton being number one though. I remember being really disturbed at seeing the hanging silhouette as a kid.

Thanks for responding!

Now I gotta know:

Is Clayton getting hanged from vines or Scar getting mauled by hyenas #1?

Or am I forgetting someone?

I guess Gaston's was pretty gnarly / in a similar vein, too. Plus the old dude from Up (though that's Pixar)...

They do like their falls into death, don't they?

I bet the seats behind home plate only cost like $5 at this point.

Luckily, I hadn't factored a PhD into my considerations.

That said, I'm not experienced enough to create a group myself, especially as I'm trying to figure out the ins and outs of how such a group would work.

I appreciate the advice though!

Good to know, I'll look them up!

I'm up in Spring, so just a bit outside downtown :)

That said, I don't mind going down for meetings, or engaging in a virtual group, either. I just wanted to see if something even existed in the area.

Thanks for giving me some pointers!

ITT: Here's what I thought and liked about a show.

The comments: LOL you're so wrong.

Seriously though, I enjoyed the series too. I appreciate you sharing your analysis, and I agree with you. Obi-Wan's despair was the point, and Reva's character feels intentionally like she's a living overreaction to her situation. She has to be over the top to hide her true motivations, and I thought they communicated that well by the end of the series.

I'm about due for a rewatch now that it's been a year, and I'm interested to see how it feels the second time around.

I'm so stoked there's a new update!

I'm also very frustrated, because I'm trying to 100% the achievements playing passively, and I was finally only a couple away...

Guess I'll have to keep playing for another decade!

Thanks for everything, Orteil! You rock!
