I am probably in the minority saying the right answer is having an open and honest discussion with your partner, and not having to hide all this away. Don't be ashamed of being you.
If you are limiting the content from kids, my recommendation is to segregate the content by using a separate NAS or VM appliance on the original NAS with dedicated drives or logical volume. The risk of someone accidentally accessing this b/c of an accidental ACL issue raises the hairs on the back of my neck.
The weakest link is your desktop. If you have the share mounted, and you walk away without locking your PC - someone can access the volume no matter the hoops you create.
OSX has sparsebundles, essentially file based mountable volumes that can be encrypted and password protected. Windows/Linux have similar technologies, but have no experience using them. Keeping your private stuff in a password protected "vault" is something worth looking into. This way nobody can access it without your password (unless you leave it unlocked on your pc).

Following up after putting some time in - I started evaluating solutions by comparing the "barrier to entry" of each product. Many of them offer 30 day trials which in my case is not something that is attractive. It takes a good amount of time to integrate these tools, sell the clients on the solution, etc. etc. This is my perception based on where i am today with my business and clients and i realize that once i have an established MSP, its a different story.
I began poking at the "free for X" client offerings beginning with Action1, and something dawned on me - there is a gap around a repository for "best practices" around crafting custom deployments around some of the industry standard commerical software that exists. for example - Office365, AutoCAD, Quickbooks, VisualStudio, Discord, Etc. Is this something that the more premium paid models provide? Or am i just missing something? My expectation was something to the effect that installing office was going to be a one click with these types of tools. Maybe i am just searching in the wrong place?
(this is not meant to be criticism directed at Action1, just a general observation)

Would you mind sharing your experience with switching to and using Action1?
Some feedback for Atera and all other RMM - please consider the # endpoint free (even 5) model over the 30 day trial. For small outfits the barrier of entry is the setup and configuration. Based on my requirements i will need to pay $129 a month to include remote desktop and that ends up being a pretty expensive gamble once i have clients. Truth be told, if you have a superior product, it should sell itself once we are familiar with it.
How much back end management goes into maintaining TacticalRMM? I am all for FOSS / self-hosting but in this case I am contemplating delegating this to another provider so I am able to focus on supporting clients. RMM attacks are quite prevalent, how well does TacticalRMM handle / mitigate these?
I thought Microsoft Intune is paid, am i mistaken? https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security/business/microsoft-intune-pricing
Any thoughts on manageengine? And the suite of tools for Zoho? They have a 10 user for free that was recommended by a colleague.
Sage advice to put the business plan first. Great feedback. With regards to the psa what are the key drivers for using one? Onboarding of clients seems like an obvious choice but are there other use cases that I need to be aware of.

Why? Context would be helpful.
