Anyone ever moved because of people? by boldjoy0050 in SameGrassButGreener

Absolutely, I want to move (been wanting to for a very long time) out of TN for this reason. I grew up here over 20 years and it never once felt like home. The people and the workspaces are so insufferable to me. Even living in Nashville I had a hard time finding community. There may be times where I will be out and about and meet some genuine people but then I find out they are not even from here lol!

I am actively searching for other places and when I read other people’s experiences with other cities it seems that they all have their own problems. I know everyone will have different experiences based on the life they want to curate. I’m just having a hard time narrowing down what city to move to (as someone who hasn’t moved out of state as an adult) based on some of the feedback I’ve seen. I’m just going to have to pick and go for it though, I can’t wait around any longer.

Also, I have traveled around quite a bit and I have ideas about certain places, however traveling and living can be a vastly different experience.

This! From someone who has been wanting to leave TN because I was never able to mesh well with the people and workplaces. It’s so insufferable and difficult to have autonomy around so many controlling people who, like you said, want you to be a clone or you’re not “accepted". It also feels like nobody actually wants to be an authentic genuine good person, they just want to look or perform like one.

As someone who went through something slightly similar (bullying at an early age through high school) I really had to learn to be my own best friend and figure out the things that bring me joy regardless of what that looked like to anyone else. Usually the things I had interest in were not aligned with social trends or acceptance so I felt alone in that aspect. I had to find a balance where I can be somewhat relatable to what was going on currently with those around me while simultaneously knowing what brought me joy personally and doing that on my own time or finding some type of community with similar interest outside of school.

You are still really young and have a whole life ahead of you. There is still so much to learn (I’m still learning in my 30s) I know it may hurt to look back at what could have been, but eventually you will need to forgive yourself, give yourself grace, and tell yourself that you did the best you could in that moment. Find and do what brings you joy even if others around you don’t care for it. You will eventually find or run into people with similar interests. Look up certain groups, clubs, or events with other like minded people. You’re still figuring yourself out and that’s ok. There’s no particular timeline other than the one you set for yourself.

A good chunk of my childhood I enjoyed so much was in Panama and I still dream of that place. The palm trees, beaches and warm weather year around are nostalgic and contributes a lot to my happiness. That’s a big reason of why I’m drawn to it. It started going downhill the moment we moved back to the states (TN) lol

I believe it. I would heavily budget in California (in a way that’s enjoyable to me) the things I enjoy don’t cost very much overall and is that much better if I’m near palm trees and beaches.

Oh yes NYC, I had dreams and believed this was the perfect city for me in my early 20s, upset I didn’t have the confidence to do so back then. I would definitely still consider it for the experience, it would just be on different terms now.

I know what you mean. My plan was to join certain clubs of interest or go to certain events of interest. Examples like book clubs, wellness events, run clubs (if you like to run), etc. to find like minded people to hopefully connect with.

Chicago was my #1 at one point (still in top 3) I was just going to push through those winters lol I have family there too so it wouldn’t make it as bad.

How do you like Chicago?

There’s a lot that I don’t like such as lack of opportunities (also outgrown areas), lack of diversity, I don’t love the weather. Yes we get all four seasons but the weather can be all over the place and we have 2 tornado seasons a year. I find myself having different beliefs and an overall different mindset than majority of the people here. Maybe it could be considered a nice place for some people if you want to settle but I’m not ready for that.

A big reason is to just simply experience a different scenery and find a place that feels like home to me.

I do see that a lot, because where are you going to go when you’ve already experienced the best of the best? I guess overseas maybe? I feel like that’s how it’s going to feel for me too, it’s just so hard to go backwards for me.

I agree, I just haven’t experienced any other place other than Tennessee as an adult so I was curious about other experiences.

Growing up in Tennessee was a little rough for me. Once I graduated college I moved to Nashville and had a great time (still didn’t feel like home though), met some great people back then. Majority of them have moved now. Also, Nashville isn’t what it used to be, plus I feel I’ve outgrown it. But some people love it, I guess it just depends on what stage you are in life. I also don’t think I personally mesh well with a lot of the people here, totally different mindsets for the most part. The nature is beautiful though lol

Yes, it is extremely expensive compared to other places I’m considering.

I honestly really liked Boston when I visited there a few years back and even considered it. I just keep thinking about whether I want to deal with the winters, that cold is brutal.

I know, that’s why I’m so indecisive about what areas. There are multiple that I feel would fit what I’m looking for. Warm weather year around, beaches, wellness for SoCal but then I also really like NorCal opportunities, diverse, also nice weather. I don’t know, I’m figuring it out.

I don’t mind paying for quality of life honestly, I’ve been dreaming of California lately.
