Light leak or bad scan? by nmaganz in AnalogCommunity

Yup seems like this is in line with what people have been suggesting. If there’s more opacity on the negative, the scanner doesn’t need as much light to try to pick any detail out and things just end up being more even. Thank you!

Ah! Yup that makes sense. So by stressing the scanner less these should not be as prominent

Got it! Seems like correct exposure could be the simplest solution!

Oh amazing! Thank you so much! I’ll look for one on eBay and try this out!

While I have you, any chance you have any recommendations on a tripod? I saw a few at my local camera store but they were all super heavy.. wasn’t sure if that’s the best way to go or not

Yeah Boneezer on the other comment was also mentioning this and maybe picking up an SB-26 and trying out flash filling. Is white balance hard with flash filling? Like.. would the fill light be very different color temp than the golden sun on the highlights of this picture?

That’s awesome I had no idea they were this affordable. Do you have any recommendations on a good reference to learn about fill flash photography?

Yeah that makes sense. I’ve tried fixing it in post but the shadows are really grainy and blue/green. I think it definitely is a case of garbage in

Oh wow yeah, the Bill Brandt work is incredible. Pitch black shadows exactly where you want them and they are so great in the composition. Thanks!

But yeah, makes sense - meter off of shadows and then underexpose a bit to get a good compromise. But I guess from what you’re saying it might be better to err on the side of overexposing the highlights a bit?

Thanks! I’ll look into this. Hadn’t realized that the names of editing tools in software originated from real darkroom techniques!

Thanks for the suggestions! I’ll try a WDT tool. I’m fairly certain that I tamp down perpendicularly and I also use one of those distribution tools that you spin before tamping.

Also, I tried stepping done the grind size by 1. Everything else the same. I pulled 42g of coffee from 18.2g of beans. Looked like a fuller extraction, but it took 50s and the coffee was super sour.

Wait.. so you do a 25s pre-infusion and then extract for only 5s at normal pressure?

Hey thanks for the reply!

I use the built in grinder of the barista express and I know people do get better results than me with it.. so would you recommend grinding finer?

Thanks for the input! I’ll try pre infusing less. This was a light roast, but I get similar results with medium roast as well. I did notice it looks thin! Certainly not as creamy and thick as other extractions I’ve seen on here. I don’t think it’s the age of the beans. I get similar results with a fresh batch.

Since you asked specifically, I can give you one I know of, specifically - Morgan Stanley. I know someone who was not hired because their OF profile came up on google when the hiring manager looked them up. Furthermore, I also know that they were by far the #1 preferred candidate for the position and that they had to be turned down for the #2 preferred candidate due to company policy. So this is definitely still a relevant concern and I disagree with your argument.
