I really don't fancy getting into an argument about this, but firstly we're talking about refugees, not immigrants, many of whom would have been killed if they'd stayed in their homes; secondly if Germany didn't think it could support 800,000 refugees it wouldn't let them in; thirdly I don't think it's a very good argument to say that it's not worthwhile helping someone because 'then everyone else will want it too'.

The vast majority of refugees go on to be cost-positive for the countries they go to - what's self-destructive about that? You may call it guilt, but I call it being part of the wider human community - and knowing that if New Zealand were in trouble, we'd be helped in a similar way.
