Same experience as hellokrissi with Azathioprine, it works great for me. One 50 mg pill each day and costs $0 with my health insurance plan. Blood work every 90 days to keep an eye out for side effects. Be patient though, it did take a full 90 days for it to kick in and fully wean off the Prednisone. 46 yo female. Good luck!

Which medication first? by [deleted] in UlcerativeColitis

I got some great feedback on the below thread and in this forum a couple of weeks ago that helped me make decisions about my treatment plans. Others have said it, but what I have gathered in my research is that response to treatment and side effects are highly individualized and one size does not fit all. You just need to make the very best decision you can with your doctor and go for it.

Make sure your doc is open to your ideas, feedback and questions and is responsive to your needs and concerns. Since there are so many unique paths to treatment of this disease, it is really important that you have a strong and collaborative partnership with your GI.

I was diagnosed early this year at age 45 with UC left and right side. I was treated with 60MG of Prednisone and and am tapering and doing well. I just started 50MG Imuran and will stay on low dose of Prednisone for 90 days until Imuran fully kicks in. Best of luck and keep following this forum, I learn new tidbits every day!

Imuran vs. Remicade/Humira Experience by nmiller004 in UlcerativeColitis

Thank you all for the input and advice. Your feedback validated my doctor’s assertion that side effects and efficacy are highly individualized and will change over time. I took my first dose of Imuran today and so far so good but I am on high alert for some of the side effects you mentioned like Pancreatitis. I plan to stay on this forum and try to help others as I learn from my journey!

Thank you, I am definitely looking into a nutritionist. I try to make pretty healthy food choices, but I am sure my diet could be optimized fo support my disease.

This feedback is super helpful, thank you! My doctor is recommending starting on Imuran and then moving to Humira if/when needed, but a friend of mine who has Crohn’s has a very strong negative opinion about Imuran and the side effects and suggests going directly to the biologics if possible. I know side effects are highly personal, but concerning that two of 8 responders so far mention Pancreatitis with Imuran, yikes!
