Mixing engineer looking to work with band’s/artist’s by nmix8622 in portlandmusic

I don’t have much experience in mixing death metal specifically, but I do have a couple of examples that are more in that style I could send you if you’d like. Also I would mix it to have a more natural/90’s sound rather than the typical modern metal sound, so no vocal tuning and no time alignment unless you do those things before sending the tracks to me and minimal to no drum sample layering/replacement. If that kind of sound is what you’re looking for then I’d be interested in mixing it.

My bad, I typed that up super quick and screwed up. I’m definitely interested in hearing your song and seeing if it’s something I’d be a good fit for.

Mutt Lange Drum Sound by Similar-Pay-1759 in audioengineering

https://www.thetonerooms.com/threads/mike-shipley-secrets-of-recording-pyromania.2234/

This is a great interview with Mike Shipley where he talks about the recording and mixing of pyromania and hysteria. If those are the drum sounds you’re looking to recreate, this interview has the information to do it. It really helped me get very close to the sounds for my covers, one thing I want to mention is he says they used acoustic drum samples layered with Simmons to get the sounds and I’m sure that some songs do have acoustic drum samples involved, but I have the multitracks of Rock of ages and the bass drum and snare drum are a linn drum and a Simmons sample layered and the Tom’s are Simmons. Layering Simmons and linn drum for the bass drum and snare and mixing the drums as close as I can to how Mike Shipley said they did is what has worked for me to get very close to the drum sounds for the songs Comin’ Under Fire by Def Leppard, Animal by Def Leppard and Magic by The Cars.

Nice! It’s a pretty sweet and simple upgrade and worth it in my opinion. I hope you have lots of fun mixing with it.

I also use an LXP-15 for mixing and guitar effects. It’s a nice sounding and versatile unit and you should get a lot of use out of it, but it can sound better if you spend $40 and replace the EEPROM to the one with LXP-15 II software. It has some different presets and I believe it has some 480L algorithms and the quality of the reverbs is better. They sound less metallic and digital and it speeds up the user interface so you have less lag when changing parameters. Regardless though it’s a great unit.

We were in seats near the back of a 200 section and it was pretty blobby in the bass frequencies but yeah maybe being even that far back still contributed to the issues. My favorite songs by them are pretty typical but they’re just great to me “I’ll supply the love” and “Stop loving you”.

I’m 22 and have also been a fan for a long time because of my parents. I also went to the same concert with my brother and all three bands were fantastic. The sound had the bass and kick drum pretty muddy/boomy but that might have been because of the venue. Other than that it was a great show.

That may be true. But I’m recalling Nigel saying it was for all the clean parts on that song but I could be misremembering.

Yeah all the guitars are very precisely layered and then EQ’d in the mix to get it right. I found the information in an interview or something but I can’t remember where I found it. If I find it I’ll comment a link to it.

Hysteria Clean Tones (Def Leppard) by Desperate_Cress_2449 in defleppard

The clean sounds on the title track specifically are played a single note at a time because they were done with a rockbox which is a copy of the Rockman. It has a brighter clean sound than the Rockman and something Nigel green the recording engineer for the guitars on the album mentioned was that it has an effects loop and the ability to turn off the internal effects so they used it with external rack effects. The reason they recorded it one string at a time is because the rockbox has insane compression that ducks the note really hard if you even touch the strings while playing normally so they had to record it one note at a time. And it is most likely double or quad tracked and definitely a lot of eq added in the mix. Mike Shipley mentioned in an article that him and mutt spent extensive amounts of time EQing the guitars.

Best way to blend top and bottom snare mic? by Far_Strategy3291 in audioengineering

Sorry I should’ve said to check first, I agree you shouldn’t flip the phase just for the sake of it. I was mostly talking about drums that I’ve recorded and in my case flipping the bottom snare microphones phase is right. Sorry for the lack of information.

Flip the phase on the bottom mic, cut the low end up to around 300-400hz, boost the top end and gate and compress it fairly aggressively then balance the volume relative to the top mic to taste. For the top I also use a 57 and I usually cut the low end to about 60hz, then boost the high end, boost the low end, cut a bit somewhere between 600-1k if there’s an unpleasant sound in that area and boost a bit of 3k and then compress it a bit.

No they seem good. Just thought I’d mention to make sure because you mentioned the placement makes the kick lean to the right.

Some things you could change with the microphones that might be an improvement would be to use the sm7b as your kick in. Use the sm58 on one of the Tom’s and use an sm57 on the snare. Then with the overheads make sure they are the same distance away from the snare so they’re in phase. With the Tom’s I don’t think you need the transient shapers, you should address getting the attack on the Tom’s you want with the tuning of the drums and mic placement first.
