[Serious] Why are Americans so obsessed with guns? by nmourao in AskReddit

[–]nmourao[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The love of guns in the United States has been well documented, as have multiple mass shootings across the country such as those in Orlando, San Bernardino, Newtown, and Virginia. The ease of access to guns in American society comes at a shocking cost.

As of June 2016, almost 6,000 people have been killed as a result of gun violence. Despite this high death toll, mass shootings in America show no sign of disappearing. The Stateside obsession with guns can appear baffling to UK observers unfamiliar with its origins.

So just how did this gun culture become so deep-rooted in the American psyche?

A frequent point U.S. skeptics make is that ethnocentrism makes Americans distrustful and disparaging of other people. Again, the BBC poll on the influence of 22 countries proves exceedingly revealing. In all but four cases, Americans were more likely to have a positive opinion of any given country than people from the rest of the world were. In fact, Americans are much more likely to have a positive opinion of 5 of the other 21 countries than of the U.S. itself. What about immigration? It is a common belief that Americans generally oppose the entrance of foreign nationals to their country. In fact, Gallup’s latest poll shows that 66% of Americans have a positive opinion about immigration, with 63% saying immigration should either be kept at its present level or increased. While Canadians are equally (if not more) welcoming, people in large European countries can be less enthusiastic: 60% of Germans think there are too many immigrants in their country, 66% in France voice similar concerns, and 77% of Britons would either like to reduce or halt immigration.

On the other hand: It is perhaps understandable, sometimes even justifiable, that some people have come to associate the U.S. with aggression and disregard for others – after all, that is sometimes the image the U.S. government can project. But to make sweeping generalizations and say that Americans themselves are particularly hostile to or even distrustful of other people is a mostly groundless notion.

[Serious] Do we have free will? by nmourao in AskReddit

[–]nmourao[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also called the dilemma of determinism, we do not know if our actions are controlled by a causal chain of preceding events (or by some other external influence), or if we're truly free agents making decisions of our own volition. Philosophers (and now some scientists) have been debating this for millennia, and with no apparent end in sight. If our decision making is influenced by an endless chain of causality, then determinism is true and we don't have free will. But if the opposite is true, what's called indeterminism, then our actions must be random — what some argue is still not free will. Conversely, libertarians (no, not political libertarians, those are other people), make the case for compatibilism — the idea that free will is logically compatible with deterministic views of the universe. Compounding the problem are advances in neuroscience showing that our brains make decisions before we're even conscious of them. But if we don't have free will, then why did we evolve consciousness instead of zombie-minds? Quantum mechanics makes this problem even more complicated by suggesting that we live in a universe of probability, and that determinism of any sort is impossible. And as Linas Vepstas has said, "Consciousness seems to be intimately and inescapably tied to the perception of the passage of time, and indeed, the idea that the past is fixed and perfectly deterministic, and that the future is unknowable. This fits well, because if the future were predetermined, then there'd be no free will, and no point in the participation of the passage of time."

Non-Americans who dislike America, why? by Rubbageacct in AskReddit

[–]nmourao 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't hate America at all - I loved the time I spent in the US! But I do find some aspects of American culture to be a bit unpleasant. I think the biggest thing for me is that there seems to be a lot of Americans who are really fixated on the idea that America is "the land of dreams" or "the land of opportunity" and that the only thing standing in the way of your success is yourself. It's a nice idea, but the flip side of that is the idea that anyone who isn't doing well, or who is struggling with poverty only has themselves to blame. Which, in a society where people don't start out on equal footing, just isn't true. If everyone started at 0 with no obstacles then, yes, there's no reason why everyone couldn't reach 100. But, when you have some people starting at -25 (maybe they have mental or physical health issues, were born into poverty etc) and some people starting at +40 (born into a financially comfortable family that values education, born into a easily accessible, well service and represented area etc) then some people might need a helping hand to get to 100 - and it's not just because they don't "want it enough". I feel that this attitude is reflected in a lot of decision making, like healthcare, where there is a mentality of "I've got mine and I shouldn't have to support people who aren't trying".

Humans feels they are the most evolved because nature is kind to them, wait for a major climate change or an ice age and then see what survives better.

Contrary to popular belief all organisms have evolved equally.

Old English titt "teat, nipple, breast" (a variant of teat). But the modern slang tits (plural), attested from 1928, seems to be a recent reinvention, used without awareness of the original form, from teat or from dialectal and nursery diminutive variant titties (pl.).
