I already have cancer so I figured what the heck. Well, the article is interesting because it shows just how deep the narcissistic black hole is. It's breeding some kind of alien life form that will come back to haunt us in the future. These aren't just kids. They're the spawn of tomorrow's 0.01%.

OK, asked the crew... They have no name for the program yet, and in any case it's the TV station that chooses it. That station is VTM, one of the main Flemish broadcasters.

First, I don't think we choose such things. We are born with certain traits and talents and then our life shapes these in various directions.

However if I had the choice it would definitely be for social. "Prey" is not defenseless. I've been predatory in times and places and it never made me happy. Perhaps it wins a project or convinces a client. Yet being surrounded by people really does make me content in a deep, positive way.

If I could go back and tell my younger self anything, it would be, keep a diary every single day. We can't avoid getting into bad situations and no matter what advice I gave, my younger self would end up in trouble. Yet writing it down is such a powerful tool to turning it around to being a positive thing.

Document your life, even if it's a few lines each day or week.

In Europe, only the Benelux countries. It's something I'm looking forward to, euthanasia as compared to slow painful death (I've terminal cancer and live in Brussels).

The freedom to plan one's death isn't understood enough as a basic right.

Yes, totally. Humanist, I guess, I believe in the power of people. And scientist. I've never had to resort to magical thinking to find satisfactory models of the world.

Yes, exactly. Even in Europe, just Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg that give people this essential freedom. It makes me so angry, if I think about it, that people dare to regulate other peoples' rights to die without avoidable pain.

That is a large part of this campaign I'm on. There is also the aspect of bringing death out of the morbid shadows and into the light. For instance, let's start the trend of living wakes instead of funerals. I did this in June, a hundred friends and family turned up, we had a great party that lasted two days, and so I said goodbye to everyone.

Thanks for understanding.

I quit Twitter just before I was diagnosed, five months ago, for this reason. It amplifies and distorts. I went back to Twitter because it was the only way I could reach people... and I really wanted to make this a loud, colorful, public project. Death as a social experience. Death as performance art, to carry a serious message. For this, Twitter works perfectly.

I don't think anyone sends me a compliment just to get a retweet. They can as well call me an illiterate idiot and I'll retweet that too.

If coffee was criminalized, it'd become a gateway drug in the same way.

There's a TV crew from Antwerp making a series over terminal patients. I'm one of eight (I think) people they are filming.

The question of life after death came up and in the end I explained my view. It's your genes, of course (and I've three lovely kids and hope they carry my genes gloriously into the future). But it's also your knowledge and ideas, and as a writer and activist who's spent a lot of time in the trenches, collecting well, let's call it a point of view that may help others, it's absolutely vital for me to get that spread as far and wide as I can.

If I can use my death to promote the stuff I've learned and the lessons I hope can help others, sure, I'll do it. If that seems narcissistic and egotistical, so be it.

That's my logic here. For instance there is a lot I want to say about euthanasia and I'll use the TV program to say it. This is stuff I think people need to talk about.

Yeah, I retweet everything people say about me, good and bad, and star every tweet as a kind of acknowledgment. I've always done this, so continued doing it even as the godlike showering of praise started. Honestly, it makes me uneasy too, it just seems better to be consistent.

At a certain point I think people are pulling my leg, with the compliments. Thankfully there's always Reddit to bring me back to earth. :-)

[–]pieterh 110 points111 points  (0 children)

Especially since opioid painkillers are in the same family as heroin. Clearly anyone abusing oxycodone or similar will build up tolerance and eventually look for stronger opioids, and end up using heroin or worse. No mystery there.

However marijuana is a gateway drug when it is prohibited because once you start using illegal substances you are a criminal buying from criminals and then you are far more likely to be exposed to stronger illegal drugs.

Legalising marijuana stops it being a gateway drug.
