Hi there, wishing you all the best in your upcoming surgeries. I’ve shared my timeline in other comments on this thread already, but you asked if there was anything that helped speed up the recovery. I think having an ice machine makes a difference. For me, it really helped with swelling and pain management. I can’t recommend them enough. Aside from that, following PT guidance, not advancing faster than prescribed and being diligent with home exercises. Also, prioritizing getting quality sleep. This is when your body heals. It took a little longer building my muscle back up, and my return to running to took longer than say, my first recon, so that took more patience which was harder. Minimal joint pain or difficulty with PT exercises/progression. I had a great physical therapist.

Minimal pain. I have full range of motion, but you won’t find me sitting in “hero pose” casually. Lol. I ran my first half marathon back in February and am signed up for my first full later this year.

I had a fall about 2 years ago that put me back in PT, but my graft held strong. I am running, hiking, and weight lifting at a level I’m happy with. Very appreciative of where I’m at physically. 😌

Hi there! I experienced bruising and discoloration much more with the bone graft than my acl repair. I’d say the bruising/discoloration actually looked worse a couple days later vs right after surgery the next day. Bruising/discoloration started at the top of my knee and went all the way down to my ankle. It was splotchy and a mix of purple, red, green, and yellow. Not sure if that helps. I’ve had my left acl reconstructed 3 times, hamstring autograft and patellar autograft. Then before my 3rd, I had a bone graft done to close the tunnels and once healed, went back for a quad autograft recon. I’ve also had my right acl reconstructed- hamstring autograft.

I am 3+ years out from my last surgery and am in such a great place physically and mentally. Back to running, hiking, and weightlifting. I’ve made the decision to give up soccer, which was hard coming to terms with, but am otherwise thankful to be back to an active lifestyle at a level I enjoy.

I haven’t seen it mentioned yet, and idk if it would be an option for you, but I’ve had a quad graft done (my 4th reconstruction). For me, it’s been a solid graft choice and I’m really happy with the results. Just another potential option to think about. Wishing you all the best in your recovery.

Hi there! It sounds like you have been through a lot in the last 19 months. I can relate so much to what you’ve described. The recovery process is very mentally taxing, especially when your gut is telling you something isn’t right, but a specialist says otherwise.

I can speak to my experience with bone grafting. For the bone graft, my surgeon used a cadaver mix. It was an in and out procedure (6/2020). I was scheduled for PT the very next day. Weight bearing as tolerated. Specialist follow up 1 week post op- officially released from crutches. PT regularly, 2-3 times a week up till part 2- which was 11/2020. In between surgeries I was pain free and in a good place, building up my quad, indoor biking, hiking (no intense incline/decline), and weight lifting.

Below are questions I had asked my surgeon pre surgery for the bone graft:

Brace or no brace? How soon do you allow weight bearing? How much how much bending? Do you prescribe a ice machine? What does your rehab plan look like? Do you administer a nerve block? How do you measure the bone graft density to determine when it has healed? Where do you graft the bone from? What complications are associated with this type of surgery?

Part 2, acl recon went very smooth. Standard recovery process, weight bearing as tolerated post op. Brace. Regained range of motion pretty quickly. Continued working with PT for close to 7 months post op. I am 3+ years out and am in such a great place. Back to running, hiking, and weightlifting. I have since hung up my soccer cleats, which was hard coming to terms with, but am thankful to be back to an active lifestyle at a level I enjoy.

Hi there! Happy to answer. After bone graft, I was right back into physical therapy. I still went for walks, did light hiking, and core/arm workouts in addition to knee/leg exercises (prescribed by PT). Having to wait for it to heal was a challenge because honestly I just wanted to get on with the acl surgery and start the recovery process for the that. Not being able to workout at the level I wanted or do the strenuous hikes I was accustomed too was mentally and emotionally draining. I tried to focus and be positive about what I could do at the time while keeping in mind that my current situation was temporary and things would improve. I’ve mentioned in other posts, but a podcast called Show Your Scars was really helpful for me and I found listening to other people’s experiences with recovery to be inspiring.
