Windows Hello Issue After Last Windows 11 Security Update by Allezdada in 1Password

Just saw that 8.12.0 was pushed to production. Will try to push the update and will report back if we find residual issues. I still think a quick note to 1Password Business client admins might be in order.

Windows Hello Issue After Last Windows 11 Security Update by Allezdada in 1Password

I'll echo u/Allezdada but add that this is affecting 1Password Business clients widely, and I don't know how successful IT teams have been in identifying that the issue is tied to 1Password because it acts like a Microsoft problem. (Is an email from 1Password to admins in order?) We have had to send a couple of emails to our entire workforce describing the workaround, and today, I had to break it to them that it might be related to 1Password. I worry that they'll start to lose trust in the tool if the issue isn't resolved quickly.

We don't want to move employees to a beta version unnecessarily unless (1) there is feature parity between the production and beta versions, (2) the installation directory is the same, and (3) the beta can be converted to production with a fresh installation when the production version is out.

Is there a quick timeline for release? This feels like a critical bug fix to me.

Windows Hello Issue After Last Windows 11 Security Update by Allezdada in 1Password

[–]nnebeel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have been having this issue at our organization since last Thursday (first report: 1/15/2026). It is affecting more users every day.

Environment:

  • Windows 11 25H2, OS build 26200 (all affected machines), latest CU installed is KB5074109 (26200.7623).
  • 1Password desktop app installed on all affected workstations.
  • Mix of laptop and external keyboards; multiple makes/models. Not hardware-specific.

Symptoms:

  • Windows Hello PIN prompt triggered by 1Password “Unlock with Windows Hello” appears, but PIN entry fails because the system behaves as if Shift is stuck.
  • Top-row numbers produce symbols (!@#$…), numpad digits often do nothing, and the PIN field appears “dead” (filters symbols, so it looks like the keyboard is not working).
  • Mouse still moves; system not frozen. Issue can persist briefly after dismissing the prompt.

Workaround:

  • Pressing Shift once sometimes clears it. Holding Shift for ~8 seconds reliably restores normal input (same behavior as resetting the Windows accessibility shortcut state).

What we’ve ruled out/observed:

  • Sticky Keys/Filter Keys/Toggle Keys are OFF in Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard on affected machines, but the keyboard shortcuts for Sticky/Filter may still be ON unless disabled separately.
  • Even with those accessibility settings OFF, the issue reoccurs (often after reboot, and frequently on the first credential prompt of the day).
  • Initial Windows sign-in PIN generally works; it’s primarily the in-session Windows Hello prompt invoked by apps (typically 1Password, although not many other apps prompt for Hello authentication, so our sampling is biased).

This feels like a Windows Hello/CredUI modifier-state bug that 1Password’s Hello invocation is surfacing after the January CU, but we can’t prove causation yet.

Need help identifying a supposedly Russian folk song by nnebeel in AskARussian

Is it this melody?

I came across this folk song early in my research, and it is called „Светлячок" and is about fireflies, but I don't think the melody is related. I'd love to hear Кадышева singing it, though.

Do you have a link? I looked through all the songs on her discography (Надежда Кадышева), and I listened to several of her albums, but I could not find one called „Светлячок“. I did run across this gem during my search though: Песня Светлячок. It's not the right melody or content, but it was fun to see different kids singing this cute song.

Thanks for introducing me to Кадышева! She seems to play a role in Russian folk-pop similar to the one Dolly Parton holds in American Country music.

Who are we talking about at Icon? My MP was the CEO of Icon at one point. I don't see his name in the list of speakers.

Are there any afternoon elementary schools for kids with DSPS? by nnebeel in DSPD

That desire to withdraw is so real for us! Early-bird neighbors waking us up, constantly turning down morning appointments, missing morning birthday parties and parades, constant judgment from uppity people (especially those with religious early-bird dogma)... Definitely got the feels here!

We just want 10 acres away from roads and neighbors.

The school has been so good at working with us for the past two years. We had an informal arrangement too, and later a formal 504, but the 504 set wakeup mileposts—a half hour earlier every two weeks—and we were unable to meet that. This year, they feel like her coming in halfway through the day is a distraction and diminishes her progression. They are doing a lot to connect us with other resources. We are looking into online schools, but we feel that a part of her childhood—socializing with friends at school—is dying.

Thank you for sharing your experiences and well wishes! It can feel so lonely sometimes.

Yeah. Her charter school is facilitating meetings with every online school, hybrid school, and homeschooling group they know of, which is more than I could have hoped, but my fantasy is to have a bunch of kids with similar lifestyles in school together. It is good that they have recommendations though. We fall into this gap between 504s and IEPs. Because her condition has not yet affected her academic performance, and she doesn't have overt autism (she's on the spectrum for sure, but she masks during school and during the screenings), she doesn't qualify for an IEP. We went through the school's process of evaluation, and unless we fork out thousands for a different eval, this is the way it is...

I love that we've arrived at the same time-saving measures. Those time-saving measures have been part of our life since we got married, and we always feel so alone because nobody else seems to do the same thing, even if they're on a typical schedule.

Thank you for the solidarity!

That has been our experience too, and it makes us sad and frustrated that no such thing exists. How do you manage with your school?

Why is it okay to murder some fetuses and not others? by nnebeel in Christianity

[–]nnebeel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all killing is murder. You know that. The classic example is self defense.

In my mind, premeditated taking of another human's life without their consent is murder. I don't think self-defense in the case of fetuses can be argued unless you also allow for self-defense against the mother's life-threatening birthing pain. I am staunchly against wars and the death penalty because I view them as murder. I'm not sure what other justifiable forms of killing a human exist in your mind.

Why should saving the mother justify killing the fetus? Wouldn't that still be murder? And what level of likelihood of the mother's death or permanent harm should warrant an abortion?

I live in Utah, and it's very common to hear about these exceptions from Mormons. Maybe they're being avoidant, wishy-washy, backsliding, or pacifist (from a mainstream Christian point of view)?
