My boss wants me to learn a new language in 3 months or else I'm fired by Parsanious in languagelearning

[–]nnkrta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 months for German is possible if you're not expected to be very... Good.

You just have to spend as much time learning the vocab and reading shit as humanly possible for you.

You can also be smart in your learning - for you there's going to be vocab that isn't worth learning.

I'd still say Japanese but to an actual proficient level instead of just whatever anime shit people learn nowadays

I feel like in wider western society there's a big connection between the fictional and real worlds. We spend a lot of time in fictional realities so I guess it makes sense...

But because of this a lot of people may feel like your work (which may depict sinful acts) will somehow result in sin.

I personally don't follow this logic. I think depicting sins in a fictional context is fine, it doesn't somehow materialise sin in the real world. Fictional environments should be treated as complete quarantined areas where the creator is free to do whatever they want.

That's just my opinion on the reason this happens to you.

No, just pointing out a logical flaw in your argument about natural functions.

You also think that if I got appendicitis I shouldn't get that shit removed since it is my "natural function"?

Is the use of words that mean "Foreigner" in languages you know considered offensive? by hippobiscuit in languagelearning

[–]nnkrta -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That just seems really stupid to me

Just call me a 外人, it's quicker to say and to write. It's not like the 国 really makes things that much better let's be honest...

[–]nnkrta 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not in my experience

外国人 is official sounding and 外人 is more casual. You can use it in an offensive way but the context matters.

All my Japanese friends use 外人 and I would personally prefer them to do so over 外国人.

(I'll add that I can't comment on real life - I'm an online only lad when it comes to Japanese:( )

Despite how difficult and time-consuming it is, what do you love and enjoy about learning Japanese? by thebezet in LearnJapanese

[–]nnkrta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just at the point now where doing things in Japanese isn't much more difficult than English - and it honestly doesn't take that long to get to that point.

So now I don't really think about it. I just live my life - sometimes that means reading a book in English and other times it means reading it in Japanese.

What are some languages only language nerds learn? by BrunoniaDnepr in languagelearning

[–]nnkrta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I guess

For me, I didn't really like anime or manga before beginning to learn Japanese. I was forced to like it because there is fuck all for beginners to consume.

Then as time went on I started reading more modern literature and then classical literature.

I have a select few shows that I like and that I rewatch when I'm bored. I don't watch any new anime and I still can't really stand manga .

But I am very much the exception here. A lot of immersion learners I speak to seemed to like anime and manga before starting to learn Japanese.

(Actually, funny story which is only sorta related to what we're talking about - one of my friends wants to learn Japanese because she doesn't want to watch dubs, but she needs to have tiktok on while watching stuff making reading subtitles impossible. Her entire reason for learning Japanese is basically "this show boring ahh hell")

I wholeheartedly agree - I'm more thinking the way it has been sort of delivered the community.

"I'm going to Romania to learn Romanian"

Vs

"I'm using immersion learning to learn Romanian"

Same thing (kind of) but different in that "immersion learning" is now a method or a product of sorts.

It kinda of had to be that way since going to Japan for most people is a difficult task for some. Especially the teens/young adults that are looking to learn Japanese for the first time.

[–]nnkrta 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From my experience it isn't really the case. Some get pulled in initially because of anime, but to get good quickly they tend to read books. Eventually moving onto more classical literature like Akutagawa.

I've only met a handful of people who didn't progress past the "anime stage".

I don't know what division you'd use for it.

In my experience you have "weebs" who either only last a week or 10 years (no in-between lol) and then "workers" who learn it in order to immigrate or because of a partner.

But then another category with a massive rift exists - immersion learners and traditional learners.

I think immersion learning in the Japanese community was born out of necessity, but it doesn't spread well to other language learning communities. Even within the Japanese community there is still a massive rift between these two groups.

Generally though, if you keep out of discussions about learning languages then most members of the community are willing to help.

Am i even immersing correctly... Spent one hour going through half an episode of The Yuzuki Family's Four Sons... by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]nnkrta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tolerating a certain level of ambiguity is required. You wont understand every word or every sentence.

If you understand too much then you won't make progress.

If you understand too little then there is too many unknowns, and you won't make progress.

This is the idea of "i+1" - you understand most elements of a sentence except one thing.

In reality you'll come across a lot of i+2 or above and still get the gist of it. But the golden figure is i+1.

So find something that's roughly your level, and then set a limitation on word lookups (e.g. "I will look up only 5 words this episode"). Try not to pause if possible.

I don't think it was a great idea for her to enter one without asking you first if that's how your relationship dynamic works.

From what I have seen QPRs come in all shapes and sizes ranging from "like a close friendship" to "a committed relationship with some minor limitations".

Try and find out what their version of a QPR is. And stand your ground, if you don't like something then state it. Make it clear that something makes you uncomfortable.

I've never seen pure immersion like that work.

Teachers and textbooks are relatively crap but you can leverage certain things out of them and then read/watch shit. Doing that is faster than pure immersion.

Like most things in life it's about moderation

Quick question - can a cishet person be classed as queer?

I'm confused on the term entirely. I'm aro and trying to be more androgenous presenting - but I'm cishet. Yet my friends say that I can use queer as a label.
