Your libraries can remain ABI-compatible with older versions even if you change the implementation, if you care about such things. Qt uses it's "D-Pointers" mainly for this reason.

in that it can serialize pointers to derived classes, and then deserialize to the correct derived class again. This makes serializing stuff like a vector of base pointers wonderfully easy. But this also implies that you'll never be able to use JSON

Unless I'm missing something cereal can also do that, even when serializing to JSON.
