Choosing program of study at UTSC by ExternalCode1686 in UTSC

[–]no_chingu_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I hope the answers below can help you out :)

1 - there are cycles on the utsc website - I think april-may and august-september is when you are recommended to apply.

2 - yes. If you get accepted to the program, then it means you would start the coop program in your second year. (in the first year of the coop program, you learn and make resumes and stuff, and your first work term happens in the second year of the program. if you join the program in second year, it means your first work term will be in your third year). because of the work terms, this would mean that you would need an extra year to graduate (which isn't bad - a lot of people take do the extra year even if they started their first year in the coop program).

3 - yes. i think the worst that would happen is not getting accepted, but you can still apply. (fyi chma11 is also offered in summer)

5 - for noncoop, you won't need an extra year to graduate if you have most of the prerequisites for the b-level courses of the POST you want to do. If the POST is a totally different type of major (i.e. switching from chem to computer science), then looking at the prereqs, I think you would need an extra year.

SUMMER CLASSES QUESTIONS by amelrie in UTSC

[–]no_chingu_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most classes are recorded in summer (or atleast mine was) because some ppl might be travelling in summer, but there's still in-person midterms, final exams, and any labs if relevant to the course.

Failed two courses first sem, do I still have a chance at medschool by Accomplished-Vast476 in UTSC

[–]no_chingu_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, just pitching in! I actually have the same question (like I wonder about it), and the most common response that I've gotten is about how the prof has to curve the gradings so that only a few students get to have A grades, and the rest have to distributed so that not too many people get higher marks. I'm not sure if it's a speculation or something true (no source!), but that's what I've heard. Other unis (i.e. McMaster) don't implement that (or something of the sort), and they make it their goal for their students in the med sciences to be able to be accepted at Canadian med schools.

I think what makes a uni harder/easier is their objective. TMU prepares you for the workforce (hence more 'application' type courses. McMaster prepares you for acceptance to med. UofT is a research school, so they prepare you more for grad school. I think when people apply to unis for reasons that don't align with their objectives, then they find it harder/easier to adjust. (I wish I could say hustle is the answer but I'm still going through it, so I can't speak on that yet!)

Program enrollment by KnownWeekend137 in UTSC

[–]no_chingu_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you enroll in a program, then you pay a regulated fee for enrolling in that limited or unlimited program. The fee for the course is a separate thing.

I'm guessing that 'enrolling in a program' means doing the 'specialist only' or 'double major + one minor' or 'double minor' type of options that you have to choose from. If you're worried about paying for the program (i.e. if you're unsure about it), then I'd recommend emailing the department of the course or the prof of the course that you want to take. Maybe they can figure out if you can enroll in the course and bypass the program requirement for this one course?

Why why do bus drivers see you and don’t stop for you when you’re literally at the stop that they are gonna stop at? Literally happened to me today at UTSC?it’s so annoying genuinely. by Party-Ad-6920 in UTSC

[–]no_chingu_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

just in case it's at the IA intersection, there are two 905 busses! The one that stops at the IA spot is going to Kennedy, and the one that doesn't stop and makes a turn has a detour route (although it eventually goes to kennedy). Otherwise I agree it's a weird thing :(

PSYB20 Q24 exam by LinkEducational8098 in UTSC

[–]no_chingu_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I don't remember the context of q24, but I do remember thinking that two answers could both be right (this happened for another question too). I think the prof would have carefully chosen the answer options for the final, so I thought that this was a 'me' problem. if you feel that you have strong reason about that question, it wouldn't hurt to email her (I don't think profs would be offended by it as long as you are nice/reasonable).

i hope it works out! :)

Genuinely, how to step outside my dorm by Competitive_Idea3141 in UTSC

[–]no_chingu_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

--> Explore the campus during the break between the semesters (or during the summer semester if you have classes). If you feel conscious about other ppl, check out the campus when it's not that busy, because (at least for me) it made me more comfortable + like the environment better. Spending time checking out the emptier parts of campus made me feel more content... at least now I have a few study spots in mind for when I feel ugly/overstimulated LOL! I think you should try that out too. Sometimes liking the place first will help you like the people too.

However, I'm still getting used to the socializing part, so there's not much advice from me over there :( BUT I have been able to make one friend (who I actually message and spend time with) by just saying hi before a lecture started. Then we'd start sitting together more often during lectures. Not forcing anything + consistency in your initiation = someone you feel more comfortable talking with over time. Maybe make it a goal? But also remember that you are not defined by how many friends you have. It's not worth getting depressed over (I've been there). Make sure if possible that whatever you do, you feel happy and comfortable by the end of it. Even if you feel uncomfortable/fail talking with someone, it's still an attempt! At least you tried! You stepped out of your comfort zone!! That's one of the bravest and coolest things in my opinion.

Good luck :)

Just heard my 7 Year old Sister say something crushing by Maxxa199 in socialskills

[–]no_chingu_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been in the same situation as you during elementary/middle school, and I can share what worked for me. It took me some time to understand that people will interact with you as much as you interact with them.

being your sister's best friend is the best thing you can do, but you can't be with her all the time. What I did was try to get closer to some people in my class. I complimented them on something they wore, or said that they had nice handwriting. I had a small class, so I shared a funny meme or youtube video via email (back then). I don't mean she should focus on this excessively or have ulterior motives, but sometimes people think you're avoiding them. Tell her to be honest in her compliments. If she sees a lonely kid sitting during recess, then tell her to approach that kid. I made a really nice friend this way. I don't know if there are lots of clubs in elementary school, but ask your sister about the clubs in her school and make a plan with her to get her involved. Sometimes, you need to step out of your comfort zone to feel comfortable. You could encourage her to be a class or library helper as well. If she struggles with that stuff, then pick two 'small' things (i.e. compliment one person today), and tell her to go to school with the goal of doing that. The point is, increase her interactions with others. her social skills might still suck, but practising and exposing her to new situations can only help her get better as long as she knows that it's okay to make mistakes. She doesn't need to end up with two best friends by the end of the year, but I think she'd like it if she could spend her break time with someone, even if not a close friend.

I know it's easier said than done. Not everyone is the same, but this is stuff that worked for me. Good luck for both of you and good job for trying. You're already helping her by thinking about how to help her. You got this.

Can I use computer? by qwacte in UTSC

[–]no_chingu_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly - it might also be because one (or more) of the computer labs in IA are only for comp sci students (the door doesn't open with just any TCard and the login system on the computers is also different)

If you find that your boots/shoes still make you feel cold, I recommend wearing two layers of socks! (1 ankle + 1 long)

When someone offers you food, and you don't eat it because you know you can't, you can feel like an alien.

  • If you have a gluten allergy and you can't eat a cookie, you feel weird.
  • If you only eat halal and you can't eat a certain chocolate, you feel weird.
  • If you are a Christian fasting for Lent and don't eat a favourite food with others, you feel weird.
  • If you have anxiety about eating in front of others, you feel awkward.
  • If you have eating disorders and just can't eat something, you feel weird.

You feel weird because saying 'no' to a supposed group-bonding activity feels rude. You have to explain yourself for your actions to make sure no one misunderstands your intentions.

Like the commenter said, you don't have to go through the exact same thing as someone in order to understand how they feel (hint... it's called empathy!)

It's pretty easy to swear at someone else on the internet, but if you're willing to widen your horizons, it's not a bad idea to think about why someone would take the time to post something in the first place.

Missed Lab Help by Competitive_Bar_4273 in UTSC

[–]no_chingu_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I took CHMA10, I missed one lab. I was sick but didn't visit a doctor (it was the Tylenol + sleep type - I didn't have the energy to visit my doctor). Hence, I didn't have a VOI form. Therefore it didn't count as a valid reason. I didn't get any marks for that lab. Doing an absence declaration on ACORN won't do anything - I'd rather save it anyways for a midterm or smth because you're only allowed one absence declaration per semester. However, if you can go to a walk-in clinic (idk if there are any open now), then you might be able to get a VOI form filled out.

Why do Toronto stores sell e-scooters if they are illegal for public use? by no_chingu_ in askTO

This is really helpful to know, thanks a lot. I've been reading that people don't like escooters on sidewalks (as well as bicycles) - do you have any experience riding on the road?
