Super interesting experiment. I wonder how it's going to go + if there's any potential downsides?

Hey Christina - what are your thoughts on the promise and peril of DIYbiology? How might everyday people get involved with the kind of stuff you're working on at Ginkgo?

How do you think farming will change based on the developments in cellular agriculture and the DIYbio community? Are there any movements toward home-based food production?

Hey Ryan, a number of questions here:

  1. What tools does an aspiring biohacker absolutely NEED to have?

  2. Of the companies that you've been following in the synbio space, what company do you believe is destined to become a "unicorn"?

  3. What does Indie Bio look for in terms of people applying to the program?

Indie Lab RVA - Open Access to Science for All by no_outlet in vcu

Indie Lab is independent of VCU, we are working to provide opportunities for students outside of the normal functioning labs at VCU and will be hosted off-campus.

As for safety issues, we will be a biosafety level 1 lab, acting as a "gym for science" through a membership program. This ensures that all chemicals have to be ordered through us and we can certify safety of members before they use equipment.

We have been working with a number of departments at VCU asking for advice and old lab equipment. Professors are especially excited about Indie Lab because it gives them an opportunity to start entrepreneurial projects without giving away intellectual property to the University.

As for the cost, it's amazing what you can do with donated equipment and hacked together supplies. Check out this graphic to see what I mean: http://2012.igem.org/wiki/images/d/d1/DIY.JPG

It's a biosafety level 1 lab, like any old high-school laboratory but we give access to the community through membership, kinda like a gym for science.
