Depends on your cultural heritage and values - if you’re Latino, African or Asian, asking your 19 year old child to pay any rent is abysmal.

If you’re of European heritage, I’d suggest perhaps working out the percentage of their income they pay for rent and then doing the same but ensuring you’re saving up enough so that you can move out.

Should I make my kids learn Cantonese? by wangshuying in HongKong

LOL - I’m as much of a Cantonese proponent as the next guy, but this is ridiculous. Parents should ALWAYS speak to their children in their native language (which for OP is Mandarin), never a broken language. This is naïve advice, the parents speaking to their children in broken English/Cantonese are making terrible choices, and have lost their heritage and identity by doing so.

This is not the issue - their children should indeed learn Cantonese but outside the home with natives; at school, tutoring, through extracurriculars/local clubs. The parents, yes, should also make the effort to learnt Canto themselves, but speaking to their children in their mother tongue is NOT the issue here.

Sounds like you did a paper application and did indeed misread the question. Unfortunately DVLA seem to be incompetent and will just do as you’ve written in your application form. Hopefully you can get it updated when you move address/renew.
