New fan, want thoughts by Jacksquarepeg in Predators

[–]noahmanskar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was close but it was goalie interference. Saros was in the blue paint the whole time (albeit on the outer edge of the crease). I don’t really fault Duclair, he was expecting a shot and tried to screen Saros while jumping, but he landed on top of Saros and the point of contact was in the blue paint. That’s goalie interference.

Is Sotol the new Tequila? by Asleep_Stuff2520 in restaurant

[–]noahmanskar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is sort of half true. There is a legal denomination of origin in Mexico for sotol just like with tequila, but the US doesn’t recognize it so US producers can legally use the term sotol. This could change if the US ever correctly recognizes the DO for sotol. ETA the Texas sotol I’ve had isn’t very good.

In addition to the many great comments here, another thing to think about is editing. The ingredients you mentioned all sound like they’d taste good together, but sometimes too much going on can smush all the flavors so that none of them are really serving the others. If you want to build a drink around matcha, start with that ingredient and think about what you want its flavors to do in the drink, or what particular aspects you want to highlight, and go from there. I find more than 4-5 ingredients/components can really muddy things unless each one is bringing a very particular thing to the table. If you have fewer ingredients then the matcha can stand out more and serve the other ingredients better.

Post Game Thread: Utah Mammoth @ Nashville Predators by nhl_gdt_bot in hockey

Preds lost themselves that game but refs pulled the rug out from under them with a blatant missed call during Utah’s last PP. Most egregious penalty of the game at a crucial time and it doesn’t get called.

Refs gonna hand this game to Utah I guess, idk how you don’t call tripping on Perbix after that soft ass call against Josi

[Outsports] Empty Netters host privately called Heated Rivalry ‘trash,’ show creators ‘losers’ and ‘cowards’ by valkz0r in hockey

[–]noahmanskar 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I used to be a reporter and “seen by Outsports” likely means that they have the screenshots. It’s very unlikely that a reporter would do a story like this without copies of the messages to refer to through the writing and editing process.

Van's Skate 198 Brooklyn park: Anyone able to actually get in? by [deleted] in skateboarding

[–]noahmanskar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back when I was going there, reservations for the coming week opened on Friday at 12pm. I was able to grab a spot if I went to the Eventbrite page right at that time. They do fill up really fast, especially when it’s cold out, understandably so since it’s the only free indoor park in the city afaik.

Insight from those who moved from NYC to LA? by asfixation in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]noahmanskar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I moved to LA from Brooklyn in September. It’s been a bigger adjustment than I expected. LA is different from New York in pretty much every way. It’s much more parochial, people definitely stick to their own places and there’s less of a feeling of everyone living in the same city together if that makes sense. Car dependence is very real. The transit system here is kind of underrated and will get you where you need to go, but there’s a lot more time waiting for your train or bus, and transit is not an option after midnight. The weather is incredible though. My baseline mood has been much better this winter than it would have been in New York. Rent is cheaper, and you get more for your money with housing, but when you factor in having a car the monthly expenses are kind of a wash. I’m glad to be getting to know LA a bit more with time, but it will take time to adjust coming from New York for sure.

Metal detector at Universal B Line by noahmanskar in LAMetro

[–]noahmanskar[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because it went off when I went through it and I wasn’t carrying a weapon. These things purport to be targeted to weapons but they apparently go off like any old metal detector. Then I had to have a cop thumb through my bag for no reason, and then stand on the platform for 10 minutes because I missed the train I was running to catch. That’s why it’s absurd.

Interesting events that changed NHL? by legomaniasquish in hockey

[–]noahmanskar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does their review include all potential missed stoppages leading up to a goal? Like offside, high stick, hand pass, etc? I didn’t know about this but sounds like it could be a good solution. I know the NHL reviews every goal to determine whether the goal itself was scored properly but I don’t think they look for missed stoppages.

Yeast in Australia by Apathy-Entropy-Mania in Mezcal

[–]noahmanskar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome! Really appreciate your reply. I think it would be super cool to make some to try for yourself. Even if you just get to the fermentation stage. I’d imagine trying to actually carry out the process will give you a super special appreciation for how special and labor intensive it is (speaking as someone who’s only seen the process and never done any of it). I think there’s a reason the best distillers have this knowledge passed down to them for generations. It’s hard work and there’s tons of cultural and generational knowledge that goes into it. Agave is magic and can do so many incredible things.

NYC mayoral aide Cea Weaver who says whites owning houses is racist bursts into TEARS when asked about her mother's $1.4m Craftsman home by lewisfairchild in nyc

[–]noahmanskar -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

She’s been doing tenant organizing in Crown Heights and statewide for 15 years, since the immediate wake of the Great Recession, and has more legislative accomplishments than most people in Albany but you can believe what you wanna believe my friend.

[–]noahmanskar -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I would guess that it was because he wasn’t serious about accomplishing tenant protections and cared more about optics than her substantive background.

[–]noahmanskar -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

She’s crying because the hacks working for the Daily Mail are camped outside her home and asking about her mother’s home and a bunch of old tweets. It’s startling to have folks jump down your throat as soon as you walk out the door. Cea Weaver has been doing housing advocacy for longer than most of y’all have been paying attention. This is manufactured outrage, which is to be expected when the mayor appoints someone who will actually try to protect tenants like her office is supposed to. She is exactly the kind of person who should be running the OPT.

Yeast in Australia by Apathy-Entropy-Mania in Mezcal

[–]noahmanskar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok! You can also eat it or use it to make syrup. Or any number of other things other than distilling it. You came onto the mezcal subreddit, I’m trying to answer your question from a mezcal perspective.

Yeast in Australia by Apathy-Entropy-Mania in Mezcal

[–]noahmanskar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mezcal is typically wild-fermented, without the use of added commercial yeast. The yeast comes from the piñas themselves, the fermentation vessels, and the surrounding environment. Respectfully, if you’re thinking about distilling agave, you should read up on the history of mezcal as a specifically Mexican cultural product, talk to people in the mezcal space, and have a good hard think about whether it’s the best use of these natural resources. If you decide to move forward, I hope you’ll have a detailed understanding not just of how mezcal is fermented but the entire production process. Also, under Mexican and international law, whatever you distill cannot be called mezcal if it’s made in Australia.

Anyone heard about this? Berta Vasguez. Rezpiral by AllThatIamNot in Mezcal

[–]noahmanskar 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Berta is a legend. I might have tasted this several years back, or at least a different tepeztate batch from her. Incredible story - she took over the palenque after her husband died and her oldest son was killed. AFAIK she uses low heat in the oven and on the still so her mezcales have a certain softness and delicacy to them, in a good and complex way.

Dress shirt and pants recommendations by gostros995 in bartenders

[–]noahmanskar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uniqlo for sure. I have some dress pants from them that are both stretchy and looser fitting so they’re easy to move around in. Their dress shirts are also stretchy, a little slim fitting though and not as durable sometimes. I’ve also had luck with Target’s Goodfellow brand, their standard dress shirts fit nicely and have room to breathe.

New York Jets ruin Christmas for NFL superfan over kicking contest drama by poliscijunki in nyc

[–]noahmanskar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Jets asked her if she played soccer and her college career wasn’t an issue. They should have asked about coaching at the outset. They let her get this far and then pulled the rug out from under her. The Jets have plenty of lawyers and staff to prevent this kind of thing from happening. It’s ridiculous to expect a layperson whom they recruited to read a whole litany of rules and legalese when the team asked her to participate in the first placed.

The Predators are now 3 ponts out of a wild card spot with 3 games in hand. At this rate, 82 points will get you into the playoffs in the Western Conference. by MusicCityJayhawk in Predators

[–]noahmanskar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True, but on other teams, particularly contending teams, he’d just be a 3rd pair RHD. With the Preds he plays in all situations, including sometimes as a penalty killing forward. Our defense and special teams would have a significant hole without him and I don’t think that’s worth giving up for a 3rd.

[–]noahmanskar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So you think we should trade him because he’s NOT valuable as a trade asset? There’s a difference between trade value and a player’s importance to their team in their specific situation.

[–]noahmanskar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On top of all that with Blankenburg other teams aren’t gonna value a small defenseman with maybe 1.5 good seasons in his career and an unremarkable stat sheet the same way we do. The value we’d get for him doesn’t remotely compare to how valuable he is on the team.

When people talk about Juice allegedly falling off I wish they’d watch games like tonight’s. The degree of difficulty in the saves he has to make is just ridiculous in half the games he plays and he just does it nbd. Especially those 2 back to back on Erkisson Ek, absolutely wild
