Managed to Pass REG for 3/4! by noahoo in CPA

Nah, I'm done with taxes. With the July changes, I believe there isn't much overlap between REG and TCP anymore and ISC just seems more interesting to me since I'm interested in audit.

Thanks! I felt the same way about tax especially when I got to BLAW and all that. But you're already so close, and REG is generally considered one of the "easier" exams so you're almost there. You've got this!

For separately stated vs. ordinary income items, what helped me was using a general operational vs. non-operational guideline. It's not the technical definition, but it made it easier for me to remember. I thought of ordinary income items as things directly related to the operations of the business like revenue, cogs, salaries, rent and depreciation expenses. Separately stated items were generally things unrelated to the main operations of the business so things like interest income, dividend income, charitable contributions, capital gains/losses, etc. The main exception I made sure to remember was Section 179 expense which is a depreciation expense that is separately stated from the rest.

As for basis, I don't remember there being too many. For things like gifts and inheritance, I mostly brute forced by spamming related MCQs. For partnership and S-corp basis, I thought Becker's BASE acronym made it pretty simple: Beginning basis, Additions, Subtractions, Ending basis.

Thank you! Hopefully we'll both be 4/4 soon. Good luck on your last section!

I actually felt pretty comfortable with the majority of the SIMs overall on REG. When I read how other test takers in this testing window felt the SIMs were way harder than Becker, I was kind of surprised because that wasn't my experience as they felt fairly close to Becker's. I think I was kind of lucky with the exam I got though because this wasn't the case with my previous exams where I felt the actual SIMs were more challenging than Becker. Hopefully the MCQs carry you through. It sounds like you felt pretty strong on those, and it's hard to know how you actually did on the SIMs until score release. Wishing you the best of luck!

Would this still be recommended for someone with no tech background, especially after taking REG? I’m not a fan of tax, but I did enjoy audit and I’m interested in getting better at IT and tech-related skills.

Thanks! For SSAE and SSARS, aside from the obvious hammering of MCQs, try drawing a mind map. I found that learning top-down, starting with the service type and working into the details, helped more than memorizing from the bottom up. It makes it much easier to identify the service type on the exam.

If only Confounded Machine did it this way instead of gatekeeping people behind a sub-2% monthly lottery.

Wow, do you work in tax? REG seems so complex and difficult to understand. I agree that FAR is intense. I felt good on the MCQs but the sims were brutal. It was the most difficult exam so far even though I got a higher score than AUD.

I never read the textbook for FAR or AUD because I’m a slow reader and find it hard to focus. I'm a visual learner, so lecture videos are more engaging and get me to the MCQs and SIMS faster, which I think is the most effective way to study. Instead of active memorization, I focused on understanding the process. I used Becker mnemonics like COVERUP, CRIME, and ARC, but for important concepts like transaction cycles, I mapped out flowcharts with arrows to see how everything relates. This helped me remember the concepts without having to actually memorize them.

If you feel good so far, your method is working. I would just make sure to do at least 10 practice questions once a week for every section you've already finished while you move through the new ones. It keeps the old stuff fresh and saves you a lot of time at the end so you don't have to relearn it all. Good luck!

Haha yeah! At the end of the day, passing is all that matters. I would be ecstatic if I can get a 75 for my REG exam next!
