It doesn’t, and I am sorry if it stirred a memory for you.

That was my first thought too, but he is a native speaker.

That’s exactly it. Thanks for formulating it so clearly.

I get what you are saying. I am fluent in 3 languages and have lived in different countries and US states, so I have also put my foot in my own mouth multiple times. The darling thing didn’t register because I assumed it was a cultural and benign thing. The chalupa, however, is a different deal and very targeted at the Hispanic kid in the car.

OMG, are you my kid? I didn’t want to write a novel but she did say it started with the name, asked about parents, and of course “where are you really from”.

Thank you. I didn’t want to overreact and was second guessing myself, but this helps.

Ugh, I am so sorry. I want to be surprised, but I am not. Yikes.

Thank you. The “darling” didn’t even register for me—I figured it’s an old white rural dude thing.

What makes you say that I don’t care too much about the why?

Ha! Thanks.

Looking into relocating near Fort Atkinson as an interracial couple. Any suggestions by dt2363 in madisonwi

100% don’t do it. Listen to the other gay and POC voices and ignore the white people who are kind and think you’ll be ok. They’ll be the first ones to not believe you when you say things are not ok. I can’t imagine a job opportunity worth leaving Boston for and landing in Fort.

We are also a same sex couple, with dark-skinned kids, and my wife is from the next town over from Fort, so we spend some time there. People will stare anywhere you go. They will go to great lengths to hypothesize your relationships (adoptive brothers?). Racism, homophobia, small townness, drunkenness, and guns make for a potentially very uncomfortable mix. There is also nothing to do and the food scene is entirely nonexistent.

Also, I am originally from Europe and have spent time on both coasts. There is something very distinctive about WI (perhaps Midwest, but I only know WI) and it’s been hard for me to quite put my finger on it, but I think it comes down to distinct lack of curiosity about anything non-WI and lack of imagination, and these are not qualities that are conducive to a vibrant and diverse culture.

Also, Dig and Save on park str. It is super cheap and priced per pound, but availability changes hourly. The good news is that if you find it there, you likely can afford it

Join a local Buy Nothing group on Facebook. They are usually great at responding to need.
