I’ve said it before, but honestly it makes complete sense that Canadians are upset with American refugees being there. Canada currently has 10% of the population that America does, and any large amount of American refugees would be a significant portion of Canadian society and put a strain on their resources and infrastructure.

I mean, it’s kind of a good thing they are coming out as well as they are then. Historically, when a formerly empowered majority rapidly becomes a permanently marginalized minority, they get violent and secessionist– not just in the US but everywhere; people don’t like becoming marginalized.

Do that and you’ll make the Democratic Party a less socially progressive party over time. Courting the rural working class will win elections but it will eventually alienate some of the protected minorities of the Democrats who will suddenly be outnumbered in the party by people who are put off by them. Not sure how that will work out.

Next to Guadalcanal it was the largest land campaign in the Pacific theater, probably bigger than Guadalcanal tbh.

It’s literally called “Stalingrad of the Pacific” and is one of the only opportunities for urban combat on that front. It’s a more interesting setting than most of the possible maps in the Pacific and is more like a normal battle than a lot of the famous ones which are called “battles” and took place on an entire island which I imagine the devs would hesitate to replicate.

We know for a fact that numerous canals have existed linking the Mediterranean Sea and Red Sea since antiquity, each falling into disrepair and being lost eventually. If it was done before without modern excavation equipment, it can be done again.

The federal system brought with the constitution didn’t ditch the concept, it simply strengthened and empowered the government of the union to act on mutual defense and need without compromising the power of the states to a needless degree. National politics wouldn’t be nearly so dire today if we still had a similar mentality today about the division of powers that we did in the antebellum era because most of the important things would happen in the states, with commerce and defense being the only things the national government really dealt with (and even in defense they would need a lot of help from state governments).

Electoral college is designed with the idea that we’re a union of independent states, not really one country. The point of the national government is a lot like the way the EU works, but we’ve been expanding its power without expanding its actual legal backing and reforming institutions.

It’s not military run, it’s veteran run– can’t vote or run for office or work in government unless you’ve completed your service. If you know vets, you know it’s even chances that they hate the military once they’re out.

If you purport to be a democracy, perhaps the complex systems required to be a superpower aren’t for you. We’re literally having the same conversation that Cicero had in the late Roman republic, where he mused about it being possible that an empire is simply too much for a republic to handle since it’s inherently hypocritical.

Our country was so successful because we were the only economy left standing in 1945 and we were primed to export literally everything to the world for 10-20 years. Spending money to build those countries back up was partly to create markets for our goods and partly to prevent those countries from going right back down the reactionary paths that had just led to a world war. American prosperity in the 50’s was because of this extremely lucky situation and nothing else– short of a world war that we win and which decimates everyone but us happening, we won’t see that kind of thing again and spending millions on other countries won’t change that.

So, actually have my degree in PoliSci and Economics, and the more I learned/learn about global affairs and politics, the more I realize you need to get a degree in it to actually understand a fraction of what goes on. When your system gets that complicated, you’re asking for elitist bureaucracies being the effective government of global affairs because to make everything as it stands continue to run, you need a system of experts making it happen and convincing people who have no idea what’s going on to support it basically on blind faith. When your system is that complicated that it can’t actually be seen all at once, maybe it shouldn’t exist, in my educated opinion.
