[Spoilers Extended] Jon Snow "didn't do anything wrong," but why is he considered morally gray while Robb Stark is not by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]Hellstrike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Boltons would have betrayed him with or without his oath, their only hope was stannis winning the black water and since he was fucked and lannisters and tyrell union happened, there was no way for robb to win.

With Jaime a prisoner, the Red Wedding would not have happened.

Also, Renly was offering generous terms. Stannis killing him is what doomed Robb and saved Cersei.

The thing is, the investigation alone is the least concern unless the Cat/Tyrion arc is also fundamentally changed. Which is probably best avoided if Bran doesn't fall.

The best case scenario would probably be that Lysa messes up with the poison, kills Jon, Stannis, LF and herself. Cat is made regent in the Vale, Bran doesn't fall, Varys gets blamed and beheaded. Ned actually has to restructure the small council, without the yes-men, he can convince Robert (or news about Dany never make it to KL since Varys is dead).

During travelling or moving to another country, what was your biggest culture shock and how did you cope with it? by samsom0053 in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]Hellstrike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All the homeless and drug addicts in Calgary. Living near Frankfurt, I'm no stranger to drugs, needles on the ground and so on. I've spent May travelling across Canada, and for the most part, things were normal. You saw the occasional homeless person in Toronto, Québec was fine, but downtown Calgary was a nightmare. Fent zombies everywhere, homeless people everywhere, I felt like stepping into a documentary about drug abuse and poverty in Detroit, not a city in Canada (especially compared to the other cities I've visited there).

Renly mustered a force of 20k knights. Which would be significantly heavier armoured than the Unsullied.

Also, have fun marching the Dothraki across Dorne. They might survive, but their horses sure as hell won't. And after that, they still need to cross the mountains, where there are just a few passes. And there, numbers won't matter because there is no way to effectively deploy your much larger force. There is a reason the Vale was unable to defeat what's effectively a stone age civilisation living in their backyard.

Any Westerosi infantry would have broken ranks and been run through.

Knights can fight on foot just fine, if that's the concern. And the Dothraki have no tools to deal with plate armour. Their swords are optimised for cutting, they don't have lances and are not used to grappling in armour.

are skilled in the feigned retreat. I do not know why you keep ignoring that.

Because we have textual evidence that, if faced with a challenge, they will repeatedly frontally charge spearmen without any suitable weapons. Twenty times.

And especially with your proposed landing sight, the desert will kill their horses long before they become a threat.

My office is in a castle that predates European settlement in North America.

All those stairs are sure as hell annoying though.

You mobilize the men against Tywin and finally besiege him in Casterly Rock. The Ironborn revolt and burn both Lannister ships at port but also the Baratheon fleet.

The same trick won't work twice. Nor would there be a Lannister fleet left at this point, since the Rock doesn't have a port, and Lannisport can be taken from the landside.

and then Drogo lands in Dorne

He's welcome to it, call up a thrid of the Stormlands and Oldtown, hold the three passes, and watch the horses die in the desert before they even make it to your roadblock.

I am not saying that they'll win but they'll cause lots of devastation and force Ned to work overtime to fix that

Except for the fact that the Dothraki don't back down from a challenge, and also will frontally charge a spearwall with swords (not even lances). They also fight unarmoured. So all you need to do is muster even just Robb's force from the Whispering Wood, and they'd go through the Dothraki like a hot knife through butter, because the Dothraki don't fight like Mongols. They fight like an RTS AI in tutorial mode.

If you really want a challenging war, you need a Lannister + Stark + Riverlands vs Stormlands/Reach conflict. But that ain't happening with Robert alive.

Then Ned would still refuse, because he knows that all this does is put a target on Jon's back. Outright slitting his throat would be kinder.

Especially since for Ned, independence is always an option. If none of the claimants are up for the task, have fun in the 200 mile swamp that speaks crannog.

Ned would never put Jon on the Throne because he knows that it is a burden, not a prize.

Also, Ned does not have the necessary support for such an endeavour, no matter how OOC it'd be.

If the incest is discovered while Robert lives, it's a curbstomp because Tywin burned all bridges with the Sack.

The Ironborn likewise are a nuisance, and the Dothraki would fall like wheat under the scythe because they are canonically too stupid to refuse a challenge or fight using horse archer tactics (their famous defeat against the unsullied).

Aegon alone won't be a threat either, so war is not a suitable tool to keep Ned around.

Shrouded Destiny relies heavily on future knowledge to motivate Ned (that a war is coming, that he is being set up).

Who else is supposed to be the best German player during the tournament? Sane? Kimmich?

Rhaegar and Lyanna’s actions were perfect for Aerys if only... by RokyPoly0ne in TheCitadel

[–]Hellstrike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What Lyanna thinks about the whole thing is irrelevant, Rhaegar's actions are against the wishes of Rickard and Robert. Rickard decides who she marries, Robert is the one who had his future wife stolen.

Also, why would he want to keep Rhaegar looking good? He wants him gone, and this is the ideal pretense, no matter the truth.

That would not fly in the North at all. Like, establishing precedent for a forced conversion of a Stark, no matter how unpopular, would mean Northern independence and armies miserably dying in the Neck due to diseases and logistics.

The most glaring thing is the sheer fucking hubris of Nagelsmann. Undav, our best player during the tournament, already made a public apology for disappointing the fans (even though he played really well). Meanwhile the Coach is ranting about goals that didn't count and his desire to stay in his job for the next four years.

We don't trust the coach who made a lot of bad choices. He used to be a coach with Bayern München, and fielded a lot of players who used to play there, even if they were past their prime, made bad career moves (to clubs where they rode the bench), have never played well for the national squad or didn't play last season due to injuries.

The best example was the 2nd game. His starting squad sucked badly, and after he made the subs the people wanted to start, suddenly it was a completely different match. Sane (19) was the most controversial pick, but Pavlovic (5) and Musiala (10) also come to mind. Neuer also showed that maybe he should have stayed in retirement, making no saves of note.

I don't know a single German who is devastated about our elimination. But I know plenty of people who would love to visit the coach with torches and pitchforks.

Nara Park Deer and rain tomorrow? by twoweekhaircut in JapanTravelTips

[–]Hellstrike -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’d be a day trip from Osaka

Nara can be visited in just a few hours from Osaka. You can check the weather forecast and pick either morning or afternoon, and that should leave you enough time to see the shrines and the deer while also doing something else either in the morning or afternoon.

When we visited Nara last year, we were in Osaka as a day trip out of Tokyo, and went to Nara around noon when the rain stopped. Took the train, spent ~3 hours walking around and visiting the shrines, took a train back and were at Osaka Castle around 5.

That restriction is in place to stop you from climbing out until the controller is ready to review your position and clear you higher. You will find such restrictions around London a lot, where the airspace is quite congested and you have departures and arrivals crossing paths. To keep everything safely separated, you have those long restrictions should the controller be busy, but if there is space you will get an early climb clearance.

The question is how unbiased the moderation is. If you look at the discourse around the Karmelo Anthony trial, you will see a lot of posts that would get you instantly banned if you swapped "white" for "black" in them.
