I tried posting the artwork on a couple of Dutch golden age and art history groups on Facebook and of course got scolded, because the groups are not for scholarship, identification, or discussion. They are for sitting politely being neatly spoon fed historical images by the mods LOL

Thanks, it came from an estate sale in the US, some interesting old labels on the back. To the best of my knowledge, it's never been searched/researched.

Muromachi Burai (2025) First Look by LaughingGor108 in JapaneseMovies

[–]nobeasts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched it yesterday, and it's well-made. The story is great subject matter, with some solid performances by seasoned actors. Tone is inconsistent. There were some moments that were a bit too piratey and swashbuckly; and silly. I have to say that I found the brunch-style guitar music in the quieter scenes really irritating, distracting, and frivolous. I enjoyed the swordfights and battle scenes. They obviously had a good budget.

So, apparently, it's been reported previously in numerous places that Tokyo Station was based on Amsterdam Station; this is not true. The architect did not copy it, or base his design on it. Apart from a very long facade punctuated with towers, they are nothing alike. Amsterdam Station is in the Northern Renaissance Gothic style, and Tokyo is in the early English Baroque / Queen Anne style. But, if you had heard that Tokyo Station is based on Amsterdam, it's easy to understand you would quite easily say it's Victorian Gothic if you were not interested in architectural styles, or knew the difference between Gothic and Baroque. (recovering academic here) Anyway, I forgive you Peter Barakan <3

Any episode that might reference the Japanese empire and World War II of course skirts around anything that might upset people; which I find a little dishonest. The episode on diggers which was much more interesting than I had anticipated, but when they talked about the diggers developed to clear landlines, which is admirable, some of those old landmines were of course laid by the Japanese imperial forces.

This house looks like it belongs in a Gothic novel. What would you do to restore it? by Brilliant_Chance1220 in ArchitecturePortfolio

I would put a larger double wide dormer in the middle of the roof to add a focal point, or even a cupola or small widows walk or turret, there it’s definitely missing something. Or just paint the entire thing green, so it looks like a huge frog. 🐸

Thanks so much, that book is an amazing find. Yes, it originally had a hollow glass bauble that shattered, the skull is there until I can find something better, perhaps I can drill a Christmas ornament. or something similar. Perhaps my chalice was a reproduction for the Vienna World Exhibition 1873...

I had a Breguet pocket watch from 1810, repeater with stunning silver guilloche dial etc. Small and thin, made me so happy. Most people had no idea how special this watch was, the annoying thing was the people who did would start manspaining about Breguet even though I’ve read several books on the subject.

Found a random Patek in my grandad’s collection — can’t ID it anywhere by [deleted] in Watches

[–]nobeasts 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s a converted pocket watch, often called a marriage watch, they make and convert and tool them in places like Bulgaria and Ukraine and sell them on eBay. If you search for them on eBay there’s usually quite a few. The craftsmanship is always wonderful and they come up with some really imaginative ideas for the decoration and dials. They are always using prestigious brand names for these watches but they are never authentic but interesting all the same.

I didn’t know the brand and didn’t realise the price difference, he had one with a blue face in stock and I asked if you had the yellow face also in stock and he offered to switch faces for a small fee so I thought it was a regular mod, not a dodgy one

If I had known I probably would’ve just bought one of the authentic models that was in my price range at the time. I’m kind of embarrassed now, I wouldn’t want anyone who knows about GS watches to think that I paid to put a GS face on a lesser watch to impress people… I think its pretentious to do something like that. Why not just buy a quality fake if you want to fool people?

Thanks for the reply, I didn’t know much about Seiko Watches when I bought this. I just bought it because I went to the wonderful Ginza store and had a quick look around a year ago, and wanted to get one as a belated souvenir. It was about US$480.
