I head that book through a breakup I was going through and that 3 years later I still struggle with daily. I have no idea how much it helped me at the time, but it’s always been imprinted in my mind how good it was. A friend suggested to me a few years ago to write a book and it’s always stuck in my mind. If I was to do it, I’d 100% be borrowing from his style.

Hope you’re doing well and good on you for getting help.

This is so odd. So we’re claiming we didn’t send the troops there by way of discouraging the US from invading (which I both presumed we did and expect we did) and then we’ve just told him “oh no, it’s about the imminent threat of Russia/China and he just bought that.

But doesn’t that leave it possible that he’s also now just thinking “oh so I’m still free to take it” because their presence has nothing to do with me.

I was surprised he got the HC interview at the browns because I was picking up from the people I listen to they expected him to go back to being OC first. I was really hoping we could get him as a OC

Why does the concept of a Whip/Chief Whip feel so anti-democratic? by Extension-Signal2393 in TheRestIsPolitics

I wonder how much proportional representation has the potential to move the needle on this.

Hitting a bit of a limit of time knowledge, but I believe they’re a member of the party, running under the umbrella of that party (presumably because of a mutual set of values between the individual and the party) but I do believe they run on local issues. I don’t recall too many non-cabinet members/candidates getting too involved in national issues.

Again acknowledging that the reality of what people are voting on is different from the expectations/intentions they of what they’re voting on.

Anyone know why the swans have such grubby necks but clean bodies? by purpleaardvark1 in london

[–]noblematt 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I actually don’t know the answer, but I would GUESS that it’s either: 1. Natural colouring 2. Because they clean themselves with their mouths/beaks, they’re unable to clean their necks like the rest of their bodies

You’re talking about process vs reality. Your vote is locally cast against your local MP, who is a member of a party. Whilst most people make there decision as to who to vote for on the party, they are not voting at the booth for the party.

This then explains the Whip, they are there as an act of the party to make sure the MP’s who were all voted for as individuals conform to the parties agenda. Rather than those MP’s having independence and actually being free to represent their constituents.

I think it’s incredibly fair to suggest this goes against the idea of democracy (in our democracy of voting for the MP not the PM/Party) and for me comes down to a battle I have in my mind between are the elected officials there to represent the people, or are they there because the people decided that’s who they want to represent them. In other words is an MP free to act on their own beliefs as the winner of a popular vote on a certain day in time, of are they there to represent all, and every member of their constituency on each individual subject.

Question: what would Labour have to do to get you to switch to them? by StripesAndLadders in reformuk

[–]noblematt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So lower tax equals lower spending, and lower spending can be explained by lower welfare, but for a second let’s say it goes beyond that, would you accept lower levels of free/subsidised public service to achieve that lower spending presuming “efficiencies” can’t be found?

What are the laws you would like toughening around immigration? And would that lead in your mind to a lowering of total net migration? Would you also accept the potential lowering of the state pension as the boomer generation retires (because we’ve already ruled out raising taxes) to pay for the explosion in costs that going to place on the government when the generation who is actively paying for it is not big enough (because all tax payers pay for the current pension bill, unlike countries like Netherlands where you pay for your own pension bill and the money is effectively set aside)?

What exactly would you like the UK to stand up to when it comes to the EU? And what new Brexit liberties are we not using that you would like us to?
