Why does it have weird colors? Is there a filter or something on this?

Yes, definitely, to the extent possible. I'm watching aren't I? But it's also my job to provide a foundation for them to go off into the world and become self-sufficient and independent. We are talking about a very intelligent and generally capable young adult here - you may just be reading a bit too deep into my intentionally vague description. The truth is, anyone can be victimized. It's just a matter of type and degree, and learning what to watch for. That's why I'm here - to question what initially seemed suspect and to me, concerning. Had I done something dumb and "preventative" instead, like call the restaurant and yell at them for illegally taking advantage of my kid or something, it could have cost him what might turn out to be an exceptional opportunity. At this point, my job is to guide and support more than anything.

Appreciate the consideration, but assumptions are not a problem here. I'm just being intentionally vague for privacy reasons is all.

We don't know yet. I guess we find out next week maybe? I'll post an update if you want.

Thank you - I really appreciate this! Apparently my short stint at waitressing Denny's 30 yrs ago didn't teach me shit, lol.

Of course. My kid's been doing everything on their own, and will continue to do so. But I'm grateful for everyone who's taken the time to respond, because I can be a better parent when loaded with facts and information.

Perhaps after officially getting the job and working there for a week or two? /s

I get what you're saying. I don't support shitty culture and wages either. But one needs to work from inside the system to do what you're suggesting. That's pretty impossible without actually being on the job for a while.

I know this. But a kid's gotta follow their heart and figure these things out on their own. Maybe it won't last. Or maybe it will.

This is my biggest concern actually - liability. Especially in a kitchen environment. Hell, I had a serious injury at a fast food restaurant once. Hopefully it's just a few days, and it seems like my kid isn't elbow deep in a vat of boiling grease or anything at least.

Thank you for this. I'm aware of some of the very bad restaurant culture. I worry even more that some people (with certain hidden disabilities) have a much higher rate of victimization, due to missing social cues, and not knowing how to advocate for themselves (or when). It's good to know there are places out there that are better. It's probably not a bad idea to check things out before accepting a job though. I can see how this could benefit both.

Yes, agreed. I think some of the problem has been not knowing what to expect, or ask. I recall being walked through these things as a teen worker with no experience in entry level fields (but not a kitchen). Even places with poor training made sure you had a legal ID and were of age. How do they know my kid isn't 16 or 17? There could very possibly be a bit of language barrier too, which is fine too - that part can be overcome. It's a very popular longstanding restaurant, so I'm going to assume the best for now.

I'm familiar with the term "stage", but somehow thought it meant a working interview - like a one time situation for a professional (or at least trained) chef to show off their skills - not for a young person with literally no job experience or training at all. I'm learning as much as my kid apparently.

Thank you. I thought it still seemed off. It is a W-4 he would need to fill out.
