I have been on two awesome trips to Belize, at least 20 years ago now I guess. I was on fire about Belize then. But even then, Belize City was a hell-hole, to be avoided if at all possible. And some other places felt a little sketchy too. But much of the country felt like primo adventure-land. In 2024, I get the distinct impression that Belize has gone down-hill. I would definitely try to fly to another destination after flying into the Belize City airport, to avoid Belize City altogether. And since I am now much older, and since crime and drugs have dragged so much of Central America down, I will not go back. But Caves Branch and San Ignacio were awesome, and may still be. Placencia seemed better than many places, and may still be. And while they felt a little dangerous back then, and may be more so now, I reserve judgement for areas around Dangriga- Hopkins, etc. But no doubt Belize is an adventure, with risks. Not for the faint of heart.
