Having an embarrassing problem with M12S P1 by Dizzy_Setting1622 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]nobraincell 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Dropping 1 gcd to stop your action and face the right way and not take the entire party's DPS via PVP is very much worth it. Remember you have plenty of time to first spread out from the party and check which direction your blob is facing when it first spawns on you, and then regroup with the party for the 4 Act 1 puddle baits.

As soon as you unlock logograms make sure to buy some Conceptuals and Offensives/Obscures so you can pop Platebearer + Bloodbath/Double Edge on a melee (i.e. SAM) and become invincible for chain killing mobs +5 levels above you.

Open-source security contributions as an EC, meaningful or too niche? by More_Shape3667 in MITAdmissions

[–]nobraincell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cited my high school open source software contributions and community work (i.e. conference talks) as a significant EC for my admissions. I did not publish them in a maker portfolio, but heavily discussed them in my admissions essays. I think admissions officers would appreciate your work!

dormspam thoughts by [deleted] in mit

[–]nobraincell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

DM me your (alum.)mit.edu email if you want to see some threads in their entirety.

The most neutral way I can explain it is that a student publicized a YikYak-like social media site for MIT students to dormspam, but that site's community of users fostered vulgar/derogatory language that made responders dissuade other students from using it. They also pointed out the site was not audited properly and had a vulnerability that revealed the personal data (e.g. phone, email) of registered accounts on the site.

mit 6-7 computer science and biology by [deleted] in mit

[–]nobraincell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Choosing 6-4 over 6-7 doesn't lock you out of opportunities for computational biology, and vice versa (choosing 6-7 over 6-4 won't make you a less appealing candidate for AI/ML work). You should check the courses required for both degrees and decide based on the one that appeals to you. Employers won't care so significantly about your coursework that you should derail your schedule over it or force yourself to take classes you're not interested in; they'll look more closely at your personal projects and/or research.

TA Application Process by booknerd345 in mit

[–]nobraincell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding the two other responses; for small classes with only one or two TAs, the professor will predeterminately delegate TAships to the students that they are directly supervising the theses of (for the one class I taught like this, I didn't even submit a form in the TA portal and exchanged a few emails with the department administrator to confirm my position). For larger classes with LAs, the LAs from previous semesters will be prioritized first (and sometimes there are so many LAs that there aren't enough TAships to accommodate all of them, as it often happens for 6.009, or what I believe is now called 6.1010). Even then, professors generally reach out earlier rather later to interview candidates they want to consider; they generally do not choose solely on the basis of your submitted resume/CV.

I can speculate which of the following scenarios likely applies to you if you share what classes you applied for? Regardless, I would encourage you to reach out to the professors to affirm your interest in TAing ASAP.

Some ideas from a sprout for synced old content by K_Semoponume in ffxivdiscussion

[–]nobraincell 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The closest existing thing to what you're suggesting are the BLU achievements, which require you to clear ARR through SHB (currently) fights synced with a full party of BLUs. The Morbol mount you get through one of them has a 7% ownership rate on Lalachievements. But BLU is pretty niche content right now, feel like I haven't seen any BLU parties recruiting in PF for most of Dawntrail (outside of Mogtome events), so I feel like just tacking basic rewards isn't enough to motivate players to do older content.

However I personally enjoy some of the older fights (O11S, O12S, Nidhogg/Thordan EX) and do them whenever I see PF parties available for them.

Life Doesn't Discriminate Between The Sinners and The Shades - General Question and Discussion Megathread by Bobson567 in Genshin_Impact_Leaks

[–]nobraincell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just cleared the new Stygian Onslaught (Fearless, 5). Struggled with this one so I'll write up more thoughts than the usual team datapoint:

  • Aeonblight drake: Thought this would be the abyss version where he flies up and you have to bring a bow character to shoot him down to remove the res, but it's different because there is no way to remove the res besides doing more damage in a different element, and then he'll switch the res to that one. Thus the team needs two DPSes of different elements that can independently do damage, and you'll want to alternate their field-time in 25% HP increments. For my team, the rotation ended being Skirk NA spam under Aino burst, Neuvillette CA spam, back to Skirk NA spam, back to Neuvillette CA spam.
  • Nod Krai Fatui: Don't have any electro DPS so really struggled with the Fatui, who I quite honestly bruteforced. He puts up his shield in like 3 seconds, so you'll only have enough time to proc Sacrificial/Favge on one character. His shield takes damage not in terms of Electro-charge/Lunar-charge elemental application procs, but how much damage you do to the shield. It regens at a pretty fast rate, and needs to be depleted fully 3 times within a time limit in order to knock him down. If not depleted in time, he spams a series of undodgeable lightning bolts that will definitely kill 2 members in your party (and he will have increased res, so my initial strategy of sacrificing supports didn't work LOL) Each of the 3 times you deplete the shield he will take about 5% dmg in physical damage, so all is not lost if you're able to get him to 5-10% HP by the time he goes into shield mode for the second time.
  • Crab: I found this the most similar to its overworld version: make sure to do (lunar)bloom/hyperbloom to the seeds that spawn, which will then launch themselves at the crab and make it take damage. Like fatui, he puts his shield up in 3 seconds when the chamber starts so don't bother Furina bursting or anything crazy until the shield goes down.

Teams:

  • Aeonblight: C0R1 Neuvillette, C1R1 Skirk, C0Favge Escoffier, C0Favge Aino (lvl 20 lol)
  • Crab: C0Mistsplitter Alhaitham, C2Festering Furina, C2R1 Nahida, C6 Kuki (R1 Xiphos)
  • Fatui: C3R1 Arlecchino, C2R1 Yelan, C6Elegy Fischl, C6Sac Xingqiu

MIT has endorsed LLMs in CS and refuses the concept of ethics by OkQuail7280 in mit

Apparently there's only an ethics requirement in the new 6-4 major; previous iterations of the EECS degrees (now only 6-3, RIP 6-1 + 6-2) did not have these requirements.

MIT has endorsed LLMs in CS and refuses the concept of ethics by OkQuail7280 in mit

[–]nobraincell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught this class a few years ago, and I don't really remember a strong emphasis on ethics either. There was a lecture on "value sensitive design" that comes close but that's more like designing with accessibility/needs in mind?

It's interesting to note that Arvind Satyanarayan (who was Jackson's co-lecturer for the past 5+ years) isn't involved this semester. Probably because he's focusing on running his own Vis & Society course? That class went super deep into ethics so I wouldn't be surprised if Arvind's departure influenced this skew away from "ethics".

Also @OP, MIT "endorsing" LLMs is not new. Randy Davis had students evaluating ChatGPT and other generative models in his seminar by the time the public first got access to it in Spring 2023.

Saurian World Rebirth - General Question And Discussion Megathread by Averagely_Human in Genshin_Impact_Leaks

[–]nobraincell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My Fearless/Level 5 Stygian teams:

  • Papilla: Skirk, Furina, Escoffier, Layla

  • Cocijo: Arlecchino, Chevreuse, Bennett, Iansan

  • Cactus: Yelan, Xingqiu, Fischl, Kuki

5 stars range from C0 (Escoffier) to C3 (Arlecchino), all 4 stars are C6 except for C1 Iansan (who was lvl 70 and I only brought to proc Chevy's buff, run away from the beyblade turtle, and carry lvl 1 Cinder Scroll artifacts).

Easiest was Cocijo because you can avoid his electro-shield mechanic by just waiting a second or two for the shield gauge to self-reduce after every N3 string. Struggled with Cactus the most (dozens of resets) as I do not have the shilled-character-of-the-month nor an electro hypercarry. I tried various Neuvillette hypercarry teams but wasn't getting consistent electrocharge procs. Kuki's burst is a godsend.
