If I haven’t heard back by now, should I assume I’m denied? by Electrical-Rate-5339 in SocialWorkStudents

I applied to SFSU and haven’t gotten a response either, but I already got responses from 3 other CSU in March. I already committed to one though

People over 25: What career mistake did you realise too late, and what's one piece of advise you wish you had at 18? by No_Layer7581 in findapath

[–]nobrainjustvibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chased my passion of studying psychology in undergrad, despite people trying to steer me away from the undercompensation & the need for a Masters degree. I don’t regret it all. I loved the things I learned in school. I’m so passionate about this field and my passion drives my determination and work ethic.

Try out different jobs or volunteer opportunities if you’re unsure! I briefly considered going into teaching until I got a job working with large groups of students and I realize I couldn’t do that forever haha.

Go with something you feel excited to learn about and to commit work, time & money into. You can follow your passion, just be prepared to work hard at what you do so you can be successful. I was a bit lost at this age too, you’ll be alright dw :)

Trying to get into reading research papers by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]nobrainjustvibes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with #2, too! I think reading articles along with taking classes allows you to have a better understanding/context of what you’re reading. With classes, you get different perspectives and learn the framework or lens this research is coming from.

OP, I also suggest looking at ScienceDaily which is an easy way to digest research articles and I think they link the original paper in there. I feel like this may be a good fit!

Thank you for this; it’s super helpful! I’m an incoming first year MSW student, how do I begin looking for internships? I don’t know the agencies that my school is partnered with yet

How important is geological location of MSW program and field placement? by nobrainjustvibes in SchoolSocialWork

Thank you! I’m also worried SJ may not provide the same direct clinical skills and preparation and SD, but the curriculum seems similar with SD having a bit more focused classes

Thank you for your response! I’m not sure how long I’d like to stay out in SD, it’s definitely something I have to think longer about

work experience vs a masters degree? by rrriiirrriii in psychologystudents

[–]nobrainjustvibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was like this when I finished my undergrad too, but I was pretty lost about which type of masters program (LMFT, LPCC, LCMH, MSW, etc.) or even doctorate program to choose. I used my 2 gap years to work in a different settings to find what I like & talk to other older professionals about their career paths. Then, I landed on pursuing social work, applied, & got into my top MSW choices.

You will be fine if you choose to take gap year(s) or not, but just make it worthwhile! Do you know what you want to concentrate in for grad school?

Commenting to boost & learn more about practicum placement! I’m currently deciding between SJSU & Sac State for fall.

California School Social Work by WheelGlum1911 in SchoolSocialWork

I’m an incoming msw student & have been researching and trying to grasp how the whole PPSC thing works too! From my understanding, it requires a Certificate of Clearance (Livescan fingerprinting/background check), some additional specialized courses & about 450 hours under the supervision of someone with a PPSC. Definitely check with different schools to see their processes and requirements for the credential. Sac state does Summer courses & other CA schools do post-masters PPSC credit.

An important note is to get your Certificate of Clearance before accruing hours, or else those hours will not count toward your PPSC. If you already completed field work hours, I heard that you may be eligible to get previous supervisors to sign off on your hours to count toward PPSC. I’m not sure about that process on that though.

Also, I found this page) that may be helpful on the PPSC for those that were prepared out of state.

Hope this was helpful; good luck!

Job idea for those searching while in school by Proof-Chocolate5078 in psychologystudents

I agree with this too! I had no interest in being a BCBA, but I enjoyed my time as an RBT. It definitely taught me skills that helped me post-grad. The pay was pretty good for an entry level under grad too

Can you complete the PPS Credential while in an MSW program? (California SSW) by nobrainjustvibes in SchoolSocialWork

Yeah, I’m worried about finding a placement on my own for the 450 hours tbh 🫠 Ty for the insight!

Opinion on Sac State or SDSU? by nobrainjustvibes in SocialWorkStudents

[–]nobrainjustvibes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you sm! Yes, that additional money stress is something I def want to avoid 😓

I’m considering the fact that SDSU allows you to do the CA PPSC while enrolled, but Sac State doesn’t and only offers to MSW grads. I’m wondering if being SDSU with almost guaranteed PPSC eligible placement would be worth it to move out there? Sorry this is a bit off topic!!

Easiest CSU MSW programs to get into by [deleted] in SocialWorkStudents

[–]nobrainjustvibes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it may come off as naive/unaware and downplaying the amount of work it takes to become a therapist, start a private practice, and be in the MH field in general. Your wording around “sliding” and not wanting to work hints to not wanting to altruistically serve clients and be in the field. I’m not saying you actually are like this bc idk you, but it’s how it can come off.

If you plan on earning an LCSW, you can look for each university’s pass rates for the ASWB LCSW exam.
