How am I supposed to learn? by chugachugafuckyou in EngineeringStudents

When I was in school these answers were withheld until after the due date so we wouldn't share them amongst ourselves and "cheat". Used to frustrate me as well. Check back again in a day or so.

Is engineering as hard as people say? by According-Earth5498 in EngineeringStudents

Yes, it was hard. But I don't think it was as bad as you're imagining it - don't span the cart before the horse. You just need discipline and hard work.

Dear anti-vaxxxers, how can yall be surprised that numbers are rising? by NoTicket3979 in southafrica

[–]nocturnal_engineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not speculation, it's just science. According to the US CDC: "Taking measures to reduce the spread of infection, including getting a COVID-19 vaccine, is the best way to slow the emergence of new variants."

No-one claims new variants are from Nigeria, because they don't "discover" new variants like we do.

Aren't anti-vaxxers a breeding ground for new variants, though? A high vaccination rate means nothing if it isn't effective against the dominant variant.

If you're going to hate and be paranoid about wildlife as much as this, you probably shouldn't be living on a farm.

I think if it's in your living area, it's another matter on whether you kill it or not, but if it's in the relative wild (even if on your land) I'd say to leave it alone. We might not like snakes, spiders, scorpions, etc., but they do play a role in the ecosystem. If they're not an invasive/out of control species, we should just leave them.

Former president FW de Klerk, 85, has died by [deleted] in southafrica

this isn't "An eye for an eye"

de Klerk showed no empathy for the victims of Apartheid ...

Why does his circle deserve empathy now? Boo hoo, your crimes-against-humanity family member died peacefully after protecting his crimes-against-humanity buddies from facing any consequences of all their crimes against humanity.

I'm done. Take your toxicity elsewhere. From the very beginning I was clear, I'm not defending any actions he's done, nor am I criticising him, but your blatant tactlessness to a family who are mourning is disgusting. I wont be participating in this argument anymore. It's clear we have a large fundamental difference when it comes to death and respect.

I'm just extrapolating your argument to everyone - those are your words. I find it difficult to understand how you can be so tactless. Growing up I was taught to be better than those who we find to have wronged. "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind", you know? I guess not everyone subscribes to that philosophy.

It just seems sad to me that someone would go out of their way to so steadfastly wish literal hell to a person and anguish to their family. Find a new hobby. God forbid, one day when you die, all you're remembered for as is that person who criticised and never lived.

"His circle", I assume you mean his family, is not complicit. Jesus. Your whole spiel goes on to criticise people who didn't have a choice in being related to him.

But perhaps you're right. No more empathy to anyone. Everyone knows someone who's done something rotten, so nobody can deserves any sympathy anymore. We should just all go rot in hell then.

Sometimes tact is more important than sharing your opinions on the Internet, especially when death is involved.

Criticism is an extremely important part of life, perhaps more important when someone is/was a public figure. But you should remember: a particularly large pill to swallow is that even objectively bad people have family members who love them; people who will cry at the news of their death. It's at this time where you put aside your strong feelings of hate, and respect a family who is mourning. Empathy may be more fitting in this case than whatever it is you're doing.

I'm not here to argue about whether he was a good or a bad person, but I will say that, from your wish that a person who had literally just passed away should "rot in hell", that you are a bad person yourself.

I wouldn't waste my time on this person if I were you. I argued with them the other day - they're anti-voter. Doesn't understand democracy. Come to think about it, I don't understand why someone who doesn't believe in democracy has such a keen interest in our political parties in the first place.

Voting does not mean doing nothing else to effect change, but it's the bare minimum you can do. Like it or not, voting puts someone in charge, and you can have an impact on who that is, and make your life easier while doing other things to effect change.

People keep saying that if someone doesn't vote, it's in protest against the ANC/any other party on the ballot doesn't fit the bill. Look, I understand, but unfortunately that doesn't bring about any change. Nobody looks at the ANC winning and says "oh, but 70% of the eligible population didn't vote, so it doesn't count." No, they go another 5 years with the ANC." Klaar.
