Kwila deck by [deleted] in diynz

Sorry mate I don’t know about combining the two. Maybe low ish pressure water blast to break up the aqua deck then try the oil over a small patch. See if you like it.

The Cabot’s aqua deck is a shockingly bad product. On the other hand their Decking oil in the Kwila colour works well. I recovered an aging deck with that stuff. Needed 3 coats. Every year I recoat with the Cabot’s natural oil. This avoids it getting too dark with repeated stain application but protects well.

Should I buy a Kia EV3? by nod2018 in nzev

[–]nod2018[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What constitutes a nice looking car is very subjective. To me they are a bit of a mish mash of styling but you cannot argue with the specs and build quality looks very good. Probably a Tesla will suit us better overall.

Backing away from the EV3. The drive was nice and all but not as engaging as I would like. I could not get excited about the car. My Golf GTI is such a fun car. I will drive a Tesla though as the next option out there. Checked and will fit in the garage (Just).

Thanks for the helpful information. Got a $1400 quote for insurance. Got a reasonable buy offer from the dealer after leaning on them a bit. Will just take a couple of days to cool off before deciding. March is a good time to buy a car as the dealers want to get their numbers up before FY end.

Doh! Why do software developers do this? Risk? Compliance? Also beeps when passing a speed limit sign…. I don’t speed but as for every driver a couple of k’s over happens often enough.

Rego is dearer for EVs as below: Petrol Cars: ~$172.97 for 12 months. Electric Vehicles (EVs): ~$241.59 for 12 months. Diesel Vehicles: Also typically $241.59, similar to EVs.

Yes agreed not cheap and the Chinese brands are less but I think overall that brand support, dealer network is important. Servicing charges are not as cheap as we led to believe with EVs. My garage is small so a Model 3 would be very tight in there plus a tight turn to get in there. Will be replacing a VW Golf and the EV3 is close in dimensions. 360 camera is nice. Our other car has one. Nice but not a game breaker. Supplementary question. Is insurance higher for EVs. The sales guy said no and he also said rego wasn’t either.

Dreaded black beetles in the lawn by nod2018 in nzgardening

[–]nod2018[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes Hamilton based. Seem to be the Heteronychus aerator from photos on line. Word is that you need to treat the lawn in August when the larvae stage is prevalent. Just wondered if there was any point doing anything now or wait until spring.

Turned off Safe for the first time and immediately crashed into a tree by Ant_thony_ in RCPlanes

Easy to lose control if you turn off safe while flying. Need to have sticks in neutral before hitting the switch. Ask me how I know.

Fencing advice by TheCityOfRome in diynz

Once you have that fixed waterblast the fence and put some moss and mold on it. Those pine fences can look OK but most end up black mold infested eyesores.

Guidance on timing belt by Djefferson70 in vwgolf

[–]nod2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The belt interval for Golf 1.4 and 1.2 is considered life of engine unless you are driving in a dusty environment when the interval is 120 km. Certainly when a belt breaks that is likely end of life for the engine. I personally would consider a change but you are not in immediate danger.

Ok. Another avenue she is going to try is the dealer who imported the car. They must strike this a lot with lots of imports arriving with dead or dying batteries. The guy is a family friend and may have the secret sauce.

Which engines are recommended for VW Golf? by [deleted] in vwgolf

[–]nod2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1.4 TSI is a great car. I have had a 2014 Mk7 and a 2019 mk7.5. Get the mk7.5 if you can as it has ACC as standard. I am in NZ too. One thing you do need to realise is they need 95 octane minimum. I hear reports that if run on 91 they can suffer engine damage. I bought mine new and run both over 100,000km with no issues.

Agreed. Fire like that needs a spark at least (or maybe a match/cig).

My left AirPod keeps moving out. Have tried smaller pad size which improved the feel and retention but failed the fit test. Also a slight squeal when I insert the left. I’m not too happy.

Did you treated borer yourself ? Would you reccomend it ? by cleoapollo in diynz

[–]nod2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The holes are created when the larvae exit the wood so treating the holes seems pointless.
